Soon after finishing my bachelors final years exams, I started working. It was back in February 2007. I never had enough time to learn how to cook. All I knew was to make a good Omelette, Tea, Readymade Burgers, Sausage Sandwiches etc. Ammi never trained us to cook either, It basically due to our tough schedules, university assignment, exams etc. My eldest sister got married when she was 20 (Her bachelors result came out during her honeymoon). My mother is one of the best cook. (I know I know, every single mother in the world is best cook for their children) But trust me my Mother makes some most delicious Lahori Food (She is from androon Lahore), She is expert in making biryani’s Karahi’s, Nihari, Siri Payee, Haleem and what not. I remember once she prepared a Daig of Mutton Pulao & Chicken Qorma for a Mehndi function of our relative. She herself prepared meal for almost 100+ folks. People loved the food & inquired for cook’s number ![]()
I always wished for a non-foodie husband unlike my father. All I planned was to learn to cook slowly slowly after marriage. But I was destine with the worlds Foodiest person. Soon after wedding I figured out he loves food more than anything. So my real assignment was reach his heart through his favorite food. I always heard him saying how her mother and sister makes food like no one in the universe can. He is one real Meat Eater. He can have mutton 3 times a day, through out a year.
My only SIL stayed with us for a week, since her husband was out of town on business trip. My husband was real excited to get some motherly food. MIL expired last year. So it was only her sister who could remind him for her mother’s cooking. He strictly warned me to give her full hold in Kitchen till she is here. Since I still work full time, for me it was a relief for a week and I was more than happy. My SIL was properly trained by my MIL. She started cooking when was 8 years old. Since she was the only sister of 8 brothers. She really helped a lot her mother in house chores. She can cook, stitch, actually do everything as mashriqi larki does. So the next day she arrived. I requested her to cook the best dish she is skilled at. Day 1 - She prepared Strawberry Truffle, Bindhi Sabzi and Mutton Karahi with Ghar ki Rotiya, Day 2 – Chana Pulao, Day 3 – Chicken Karahi & Ghar ki Rotiya (which I took over since she makes really moti and shapeless roti’s and we like phulka’s), Honestly her cooking was okay, She cooks like beginner does, compared to her experience in cooking, I was certainly expecting something extraordinary. My husband appreciate her a lot. He used every flattering word in three days. Day 4 - I received husbands call at work. Requesting me to reach home at take over kitchen. Cook something good as he is not adjusting to SIL cooking , not even eating wholly, and since he can’t say her directly. In short he is not liking her cooking at all. :-). Inside I really felt good. It still feel sooo good remembering it. ![]()
It’s been 2 years we are happily married Mashallah, he calls me professional in his favorite food, I can make everything now, My parents, siblings, In laws, friends, colleagues have tasted my food and appreciated my cooking skills, My ammi feels strange like how I never have troubled her to know methods like my elder sister and bhabhi does. She think I have millions of recipe books at home. Well I don’t know why but whatever I cook turn out really well. Whenever I try new thing. Like yesterday I tired Pakora Kadhi for the first time. I simply wander on internet for Kahdi recipe. Collected basic points and tried it. I don’t maintain a cooking book, I never follow measuring techniques. I do not write or print out recipes when trying anything new. I simply memorize it. My husband has a habit of calling me before he reaches home (just to ask what I have cooked for dinner). I reach home by 6:00, So I get only 1 full hour to cook fresh homely food before he reaches home.
When I told him I have made Pakora Kadhi, He was like “ Khair hai, aj lagta hai bohat pyar ara hai”. Seriously I defiantly cook with extra love when I am happy with life I am spending with him. He is such a blessing. I truly adore him.
PS: My Pakaro Kadhi turned out extremely tasty. Since I prepare good Quantity, I brought at work for my colleagues too. They loved it. Just received a call from colleague’s wife for my secret recipe (her husband called her as soon finishing the meal). Hahaha! O God they don’t know I myself is learning, They don’t know It was my first try, Don’t have any secret recipe. I just Cook with Love.
