Cooking oils

How long do you usually keep (unused) cooking oil before you replace it?

Does anyone store their oil in the fridge?

how often do you reuse oil or keep already-used oil?

Re: Cooking oils

as in oil used for deep-frying? if it didn't smoke, we use it one more time.

Re: Cooking oils

unused cooking oil? i dont get the q.

oil in the fridge: nopes.. never. unless its bhagaar wala oil with onions in it.

for used oil.. same as queer. we re-use once more. if it didnt burn. otherwise out with the old in with the new.

is it just me that actually feels like oil is being wasted after just using it once. ya i get it with all the health and safety etc … but still.. itna sara oil .. all going down the drain. literally.

Re: Cooking oils

^^No Khawa you are not the only one.I feel the same way.I hate pouring oil in a karhai because you have to add a lot and then it has to go waste after a few uses.

To the OP...I have never kept oil in the fridge, and how long do I keep it...Hmmm as long as it lasts..!Depending on the size of the container I get I use mine in 2-3 months.

Re: Cooking oils

Do you store it in the fridge ?

by unused, I mean…ok…so 'im going to one of those wholesale shops today, where they sell everythign in huge quantities…I’m thinking if it’s worth it to buy a huge bottle of oil from there. Normally I buy the 48 oz bottle and that lasts about 2 months (if I go on a frying bender…then less :bummer: ). If I were to get a much bigger bottle, I was wondering if that would go bad somehow…since it’d take alot longer to finish… i hope that makes sense.

The waste is killer… :frowning: that’s why I don’t deep fry too much I guess..if I HAVE to fry, I do shallow pan-fry… and use it 2-3 times and that’s it.

So already-used oil (like for baghar) can be kept in the firdge?

Re: Cooking oils

Cooking oil does not go bad and also you can check the expiry date.If my club membership is expiring I try to get two big bottles and they last me like 6 monthsor more maybe and never have they gone bad.Btw they do have smaller cooking oil bottles at BJs so maybe if your club offers those you can get those.
Health aspects aside,I have never made fried chicken because you need a lot of oil for that and it has to be disposed off after that and I just cannot do that...too much wastage of oil..!!

Re: Cooking oils

^ I am going to BJ"s actually…ok i will check ti out. We just got the membership but I have a feeling we might just cancel it. Really no use for us at this point. :bummer:

Re: Cooking oils

^^ Yes its just you and your husband so you probably won't use your wholesale club card much but I did when it was just the two of us... toilet paper, paper towel, oil, ketcup, bread, cleaning products, they all last me good 4-6 months. Even now other than baby's milk we don't really use it for anything else other than the stuff I mentioned. I think stocking up once is a better idea than to be always out of stuff and running to stores every day. Oh and oil, I dont think it goes bad.. the unused one in the container. I never re use oil... just in Ramadan maybe few times.

Re: Cooking oils

when every I fry pakoras, I pour the oil back in the oil container that stays on the counter and use that oil for regular cooking. Also, I don't fry things in karhai but a shallow pan, therefore, I don't have to use as much oil as you have to in a karhai. I keep my oil, both used and unused outside, not in a fridge. I have a small container that I keep on the counter and refill it as needed.

Re: Cooking oils

I use a separate oil for frying and another one for cooking. When I fry something, which is usually french fries and pakoras, I re-use that same frying oil like 3-4 times, then it goes down the drain. I'm only using it for frying so I think it's fine. I've never re-used frying oil for cooking.

Re: Cooking oils

I am not sure if you have the full membership or trial one.BJs offers 2 months of free trial membership and you can see if it is something you want. You just have to do the maths before shopping there and knowing the prices.

(If you need the trial pass,it is on the facebook page and you can like the page and print it from there).
