…makes me realize that I am a taster. What that means is that I taste my dishes as I am cooking to check whether the spices and seasoning is balanced. Unfortunately that’s not an option in Ramadan
Are you confident enough in your cooking that you don’t feel the need to taste your dishes during the cooking process, knowing the seasoning will be perfect once done, or are you a taster who adjusts spices and seasoning while you’re cooking?
I dont want to change the belief system of people but tasting food (for a cook) is allowed in Ramadan. You can taste it and spit it out. Just dont swallow it (or savor the taste :D) ..
and no, you dont have to have a zalim shohar to be allowed tasting the salt. Its just that if you are cooking food and not sure if namak/mirch is ok, you can tatse (however not many does that)
I had always heard of the zaalim shohar exception, LOL! I’d feel guilty doing the taste and spit routine because I’m constantly tasting and evening out the seasoning - that almost makes a meal of the tasting :sid:
Whose shohar would be so zalim to abuse his wife for more salt when the wife had roza. This is amongst few of the pseudo-rulings that were intentionally introduced as a safety net. Another one is where your molvi tells you that Sheri time finishes 5 mins before the Fajr time starts. Many printed calendars of Ramazan have that extra column in them. That is also another pseudo-ruling.
I am a taster and generally taste the food when I am cooking.I don’t do it in Ramadan and never felt the need to do it.
Although I made some salan the other day and the proportions were different than usual…I later realized that it required more salt and peppers…
I think when you cook regularly at home, you tend to know exactly what amount of spices are needed in a salan ... I am pretty practiced at the spice bit .. its occasionaly for dawats when the quantity of the food changes that I become careful ..
I think alot also depends on habit .. if you are constantly in the habit of tasting food and adjusting spices , you wont be able to gain that andaaza of how much spice you are using ... My mom used to shun that habit big time and that sort of encouraged us to observe more.
i always cook with andaaza except for desserts coz i dont make too much meetha in everyday cooking so i seldom taste while cooking n it turns out fine ,like CB said when u cook regularly ,you know much is requrired n my mom also doesnt like tasting the food gain n again
It may seem funny but during ramzan i normally smell the cooked food it pretty much gives an idea if the taste is some what closer to the actual. Try it,it may give a good idea!
The sniffing works for me.. gives me a good idea of what the taste maybe. My family makes fun of me when i do that but if it smells so yummy it might as well taste yummy too ;)
