You are correct Mukobhai - according to some hadith (which you will be able to read on the page I linked in my earlier post) apostasy was punished by death.

The question still remains though - the Quran mentions apostasy in numerous versus - in none of those is there a punishment for apostasy in this life - hence should we go above and beyond what the Quran says (or in this case does not say) based on Hadith?

Sir HAZRAT MUHAMMAD SAW never goes against Quran so HADEES if it is authentic than it is according to Quran and people were killed in the time of PROPHET SAW for leaving Islam and it is an agreed issue among all the fiqahs
