controversial question

I was reading the newspaper on my way to work today and came to an artcicle where the writer was saying that the retirement age could rise to 85 if studies on ageing are successful.

If successful, average age could go up 20 years and so retirement age would also have to increase…

My question is, we as muslims believe that the time of your death is written/confirmed even before you are born. so if the average age does rise by 20 years does this mean science has prevailed? or Allah has increased the age of THAT generation by 20 years.

similarly

people living in developed countries live longer than developing countries, does this mean that Allah gave those people shorter lifespans and their deaths were written on the wall beforehand or simply because we have better facilties.

Either way, do you think death is really confirmed beforehand then?

Re: controversial question

Either you believe in destiny or you don't. It's just a way you choose to get though life. Some like to believe they can make their destiny, some just leave it to/attribute the events that take place in their life to destiny. Some feel that it's a little bit of both, just like God helping you only when you help yourself. As for the debate on death and it being pre-destined, that's like opening a pandora's box, cos then u have to look at what happens after death, the reason you were called up etc. Or else, you just say that death can occur anytime, anywhere, or that it's just a natural process.

Re: controversial question

I see no controversy. Allah SWT knows all, including the quality of medical care that you'll get in your lifetime and whether you'll die of other factors before benefitting from this healthcare. So what's written beforehand would vary depending on such matters.

Re: controversial question

^Agreed.

Re: controversial question

don't really see a controversy here. Thousands of years ago, people used to live to be hundreds of years old (i.e. Prophet Nuh's time). They didn't have any special medical care to give them longevity. Nowadays we hear stories of people living to be 100+ in remote locations around the world which is mainly attributed to their diet. According to Muslim belief your time on this earth is decided while you are in your mother's womb. You might live to be a 100+ due to medical advances or just plain good health.

Re: controversial question

Even a poor car maker company can tell its customers the life expectancy of the car they make; now depending on who owns the car and how he uses it can greatly affect its life. So, why can’t Allah, who is perfect in its creations, tell exactly how long a person will last? Though, if that person puts a bullet through his/her head, you can’t say that it is how long Allah wished him to live. Allah made him to live his whole life, the person cut it short himself.

I personally consider it a very dangerous aqeeda when someone justifies a wrong by saying it was Allah’s will.

Anyway, the retirement age in Europe is bound to go up; it’s not as much about life expectancy as it is about economics.

Re: controversial question

Oh and this idea that people in ancient times used to live for hundreds of years is a misunderstanding of the verses of the Holy Quran.

Re: controversial question

85? I mean come on, thats being very very optimistic.

*My question is, we as muslims believe that the time of your death is written/confirmed even before you are born. *

I er dont see why 20 years added to the average life should in any form contradict what you've said above.

Re: controversial question

really

Re: controversial question

I think God knows more about human biology than scientists and doctors combined. I'm sure He's figured out what medicines/methods/ways of life increase life span and which ones don't, and its just that we're not stumbling upon them.

I doubt the retirement age could go up to that age...honestly, people in their 70's and 80's tend to be out of it. Would you trust someone to do work at that age?

Re: controversial question

My friend you are taking things very seriously, all they want is your retirement and pension money even if you exists at 85 or not

Re: controversial question

thanks for the interesting replies,
see u all at 85!

Re: controversial question

mere daftar ka retirement age 70 hain.

Re: controversial question

the enquiry has been very well answered indeed
no need to throw more light from myside except that the AVERAGE age has increased
average doesn't mean everybody
or does it?

Re: controversial question

What makes you think that they didn't use to live hundreds of years?

Re: controversial question

^ it was very possible for Humans to live well over 100 years in millenniums ago.
However if you say people lived well over 100 years in the past 2000 years, then no. We know that by The Holy Scriptures.

Re: controversial question

Death is a set date, same as the birth date. So nothing can change it. Allah :swt: has the control over everything, if he wants to give life to something/someone there is no stopping that and it could only be prolonged by him.

Re: controversial question
