Controversial Art and Freedom of Expression

Just googled ‘Controversial Paintings’ and found out that many have tried to hit religious sentiments of people who follow these religions.

What do you think are the limits of freedom of expression in Art?

Is to necessary to express your feelings (right or wrong) at the expense of others feelings?

Re: Controversial Art and Freedom of Expression

If artists were to always tiptoe around people's feelings it would affect their integrity and dull the value of art in general. Censorship, boo. Intent is key, etc etc.

Re: Controversial Art and Freedom of Expression

Do you think artist follow self-censorship by not indulging in works which are against the feelings of a sizable majority. Sometimes artists seem to break all boundaries just to portray themselves as agitator.

Re: Controversial Art and Freedom of Expression

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion n there should be freedom of expression but not at the cost of other ppl feelings

Re: Controversial Art and Freedom of Expression

muqawwee, I think most people follow some form of self-censorship. Artists are not exempt from this. If they must have boundaries then those boundaries should be further out than the rest of society's boundaries.
Agitators are not without value. Those with malicious intent are usually rumbled, and those who pursue nothing but shock factor may make headlines but they rarely receive any respect.
