Contributions of "Urdu Speaking People" in the early years of Pakistan

I don't think we are seeing a 'lot of threads' regarding urdu speaking people. Almost all hatred is directed towards MQM and not a particular race. If a particular Pakistani race has been stained on GS, it is 'Punjabis'. The heat only starts when the so-called 'mohajirs' claim suppression by other races. The exampls you give enlighten us all that not only did they take part in development of Pakistan but also took leading role in many areas dispelling the myth of being a subjugated community.

personally i have never thought Mqm is equal to urdu speaking people. Mqm is equal to thugs in my books.

atleast with substance nice post...

claps Bravo! you guys are fighting MQM's case brilliantly.

Lets talk about some myths here, It may come to you guys as surprise that MQM strongest hold is HYDERABAD, not Karachi. In Hyderabad even during the 92 operation, MQM suffered no setbacks nor there any fraction like HAQIQI group surfaced. Also MQM's posture in Hyderabad is somewhat different from what we see in Karachi. Wonder why? Reason is that people support them for same reasons in these two cities, but MQM handles them differently. In Karachi it’s about controlling the resources and in Hyderabad it’s purely about ETHNICITY and survival.
you are partially right MQM didnt handled it differently but it was more to do with survival and hyderabad saw worst violence i am a tiny witness to it used to study in a boarding school there...
it was such a mess that both populations sort of divided the city in one part there was one and remainder the other (i wont name them).
i was a sixth grade kid at that time and was studying in boarding school in hyd..
and i would say this all of the killings and drama including creation of MQM was done by ZIA, there was state's hand in everything that happened if not how come those who murdered hundreds in pakka killa area arent punished but are free.

Now the myths about Urdu speaking elite suppressed other ethnicities. Since this thread is the by-product of thread about MQM, I will talk about Sindh only as MQM grew ONLY in Sindh.
well may be that was not done deliberately but happened due to allocation of hindu leftover property and many flase claims they came in a position to dominate the others but frankly i have never heard they actually dominated either locals(at that time) didnt care or it never happened.

Myth 1 USP deprived other ethnicities of education.

DD in other thread again and again mentioned Sindh University and urban & rural Sindh. What we actually know about their history? Apart from what we find on Wiki Pages.
Sindh University has only one campus in HYDERABAD, Elsa Qazi campus for B.Ed and M.Ed courses. The main Campus is in District Jamshoro, formerly part of District Dadu. Supposedly Hyderabad has 4 universities but in reality NONE of them is in HYDERABAD. No doubt Sindh University was the 1st university in Sindh, but till late 60's it was more like a post graduate centre for training academic professionals. It grew to a proper university when it was moved to Jamshoro. let me remind you Hyderabad was Sindh's capital up until Islamabad was declared country’s new capital. After introduction of quota system, residents of Hyderabad were effectively sidelined; despite having 3 major universities on city’s crown, they had/have no proportional access to these institutions. Dadu city which is about 170 kms away from these institutions has more quota than all of Hyderabad.
Till 90's Karachi had only 2 universities, and again Karachites had only 40% share in those (shared with URBAN Sindh).

never happened i guess but it was zia who raped sindh, took time to take interest as most of them were agri based economy and they were doing better based on their thinking.

Now about the myth, let’s suppose USP DID deprive other ethnicities, then why they didn’t bother to equip their next generations with better higher education? knowing very well that only the better education will help them to control “civil Burocracy” in the long run? If they had unchallenged control over country’s resources then I think they did a terrible job by not trying to sustain that control.
agree on that, i am strong beliver in that nations, people groom in times of crisis that is when they think out of box...sindh as it is today frankly is rotten culturally, politically and financially.. i guess sindhi speaking have become used to getting government jobs and that even with sort of through contacts no competition and this govt has made it worse.
i saw some hope in times of musharraf in them as they were neglected , lesser water, etc they started opting for private sector jobs etc but now with coming of PPP govt again back to square one.
Myth 2 USP were not well educated (relatively speaking)

Again not true because if that was not the case then how they managed to acquire key civil posts, which allegedly gave them control over country’s resources and “influence” for more than a decade? It doesn’t mean other ethnic groups were less educated, but it’s a fact that proportionally within ethnic group USPP had higher literacy rate.
i disagree on that, while talking about that your scope seems to be limited to khi only but at that time whole country needed to run and it wouldnt have if educated people werent at the slots...

Myth 3 Liaquat Ali Khan “IMPORTED” immigrants to Karachi.

Again baseless accusation. Karachi was country’s capital that time, and country needed experienced staff to run day to day state business. The locals were not in great numbers in government departs and void had to be filled. These immigrants filled that void, and since Karachi was state’s capital it was logical for them to settle in Karachi. Decade later when LOCALS did start taking interest in Government jobs, the balance shifted towards them; Which was bound to happen.
i am not sure about that as had heard conflicting accounts on him but some people are larger than these kinds of debate of ethnicity, race, what their belief were and he was one of them.

Myth 4 Immigrants financial contribution is exaggerated.

A quick check on industry prior to Bhutto’s nationalisation program will reveal the truth. All major industry and businesses were held by these Memon and Gujrati immigrants. The new wealth started coming to Industry in late 60’s and then it flourished in Zia’s tenure. Also for those Gujrati and memon immigrants who migrated to Pakistan, Karachi was their natural choice for Karachi being the financial capital of country. The city had/has more business opportunities than any other city in Pakistan. In 80’s when heavy industry was MIGRATING from Sindh to Faisalabad and Gujrat, these immigrant memon and gujrati bijness community kept city’s economy intact. In 80’s Sindhi speaking industrialists also started coming into picture. Speaking of media, till mid 90s USP owned major media groups but it changed. Sindhi speaking groups like KAWISH also realised importance of media and now they are growing in numbers. But there is no denial that Jang group was/is the largest media outlet there. ARY which is Dubai based is also owned by memon immigrant family. List is long.
although bulk of gujratis were here but still as you are mentioning gujratis who came after partition.
lets start with the timeline..
pre partition much of the businesses were held by hindus, parsis, gujratis/memons, agakhanis and bohris.
after partition hindus left or thrown out VOID was created and was filled by gujratis migrants and others.
now if you want to do the comparison ask them who migrated what their cousins(if they have their) are doing in india and specially ask this questions from ARY guys as i know little about them you would get the answers .
prepartition most of them didnt owned mills there but small businesses like village grocey stores, some dealt in food items, other were the small to medium.
Historically communities were formed around wat they did, some were peasants, some traders and other doing certain jobs and go to dubai and most of the large businesses are owned by same sindhi hindus who left or were thrown out...

Myth contribution of Nizam daccan

Who you think paid for government expenditures in early months of Independence when British and Indian Government were delaying funds for the State? It’s a part of history and there should be no denial about it. They were also robbed of independence like Kashmir and Junagarh. Infact it was operation polo by British forces which crushed Hyderabad resistance and hand it over to India. (at least in Kashmir Indian forces bothered to advance their forces)
please quote me the reference he was a mean person and reason he cooperated (not sure about financially) was india wanted to take his state and pakistan guaranteed he would retain it.
Myth Ethnic hatred was only demonstrated by USP.
(When Benazir came back to Pakistan for the 1st time after exile) and slogans about pushing MAKArDs (Sindhi word for insect) into sea.
slogans were there and those were from both sides
reason for slogans was understandable people were sort of blocked from two cities and recent madness that had happened and i guess both have learnt from that.
In Sindh it is very different now; there is still a long way to go, but at least USP and Sindhi brothers have realised that they both are a reality and they are together in this mess.
Ethnic bigotry is the 2nd most dangerous threat to Pakistani society
i would still rate it 1st.

When you have nawaz league, what else do you need?

:yawn::yawn::yawn:

Perhaps I was not born or was a kid. I still remember as a child that in 1972 when Sindh's government implementing Sindhi as provencial language of Sindh, these intelactuals were the first ones to create hatred for Sindhis by saying

"urdu ka jenaza hay barhay dhoom se nikle" Does this ring some bells in to your ears?

Raees Amrohi the one of the intelactuals of Karachi who trumpeted this in Jang Karachi on the day when this bill was going to pass. Language riots were started by muhajirs to oppose this bill to core of their heart. Later mqm murdered their own old poet/intelacutal mercilessly.

I also agree
Actualy there were very less qualified govt from other provinces and urdu speaking who opted Pakistan at the partition were devoted and worked hard.
Most of them were against MQM in 80s and 90s but now most of them are very old or expired.
