Continuous USB disconnection

Alright guys, I am going to post my problem which I haven’t been able to solve. I have tried researching it every where. XDA forums, other hardware forums but no success.

So i recently got Dell XPS 9530 with windows 8.1. The problem is that whenever I plug in my Android device (I have tried Sony Xperia, HTC One M8, Samsung S6) it keeps disconnecting. The problem exist with BlackBerry Classic, Passport and even Z10.

I have tried updating my drivers, different cables and what not, but the connection isn’t consistent. I have got my laptop’s motherboard replaced twice, got my laptop replaced once and the problem is still there.

Thats not the only weird part, if i plug in any portable harddisk, it works fine so i believe it has something to do with Android MTP protocol ? But then why BlackBerry’s connection isn’t persistent ?

Anyways, If you guys have any thoughts or been there done that then let me know.

Appreciate your help.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

I am sure you have tried this, but do you have access to any other windows 8.1 computer to give it a try?

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

I have not used windows 8.1 much, but does it have a power saving mode/profile? Could it be it shuts down usb, for lack of activity? hard disk stays up, coz there is continuous activity and it never really 'times out'.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

Sometimes MTP also gives out if your phone screen gets locked. Try to increase the lock time.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

I can't recall. I have for sure tried other laptops with Windows 7 and everything worked fine. Can't recall if i tried with windows 8 or not.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

Hmm, I can try that but i guess the answer would be same what i gave to @OYMWA.

thats not the case, since it even happens when i have my phone held in my hands while browsing some apps. The disconnection is continuous.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

bad cable?

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

  1. The one which came in the box with HTC One M8.
  2. The one which came in the box with Samsung S6
  3. Order different cables from Amazon
  4. Used the cable which was working fine with Windows 7 on my old laptop.
  5. Use the cable which works fine for my portable hard disks.

all of them produced the same result.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

Try different USB port? Upgrade BIOS? If problems till persists, it probably has a bad USB header or bad motherboard.

Its not a windows 8 issue.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

I have tried all ports (usb2.0 and 3.0) both which are on my laptop and the problem is there. I got my laptop's mother replaced twice and now getting the laptop replaced (twice again) :(

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

may be not enough power. try using usb hub with power.

Re: Continuous USB disconnection

Is there an Event Logger in windows 8? Do you see anything there?
