The God of Small Things- Arundhati Roy
One of my favorite books ever!!! How is this drama remake? ![]()
…and what does “talkhiyan” mean?
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
I haven't seen complete drama, but the writer who dramatised this novel , director and lead actors all got very good reviews. So will try one day.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Oh I remember to read that one of Mohsin Hameed's novels have been adapted for a Pakistani movie. Probably its 'Daira' based on 'Moth Smoke'. I got the novel, but never completed it. That writer reminded me Nadeem Paracha. so much drunk characters.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
^^ Diara was badly made I felt like. Totally missed conveying the character/feel of the story.
I loved Moth Smoth - I love Mohsin Hamid allot.
Moth Smoth
The Reluctant Fundamentalist
How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia (this is my favorite)
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
^ I second How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia. The White Tiger is entertaining too.
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. Opium wars, laskars, the high seas. So much fun.
Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance is very readable, enjoyed it so much I was upset when it finished.
For short stories Daniyal Mueenuddin is interestingish. There is also Jamil Ahmad, not read him yet though.

How could I forget Daniyal M.
He’s interesting to read as well.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
I read "A case of exploding mangoes" by Mohammed Hanif a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.
Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Moth Smoke I absolutely loved…Reluctant Fundamentalist I tried so hard to get into but I just couldn’t, I will have to revisit that one.
The White Tiger I bought to read on a return trip from Dxb and instead fell asleep and left the book on the plane ![]()
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts - its one of my all time favorites.
It's set in the subcontinent.
YES!!! Omg, I was about to suggest that too in my original post, but deleted it because it’s not written by a South Asian,
It is hands down, my absolute favorite. I so want to suggest it for GSBC but the size of the book will send Muniya into fits ![]()
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
^^
Nahee that was an incredible read!!! I loved it - devoured the book. And back then we didn’t even have kindles so I held the bulky book.
He’s supposed to write a prequal to it but hasn’t gotten around to it. It took 6 yrs to write Shantaram Allah janai how long he’ll take to write the Prequal.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
I read the book few years ago. Saw a few episodes of the drama. Disappointed. Not because it was badly made but because it is extremely difficult to make. Actually, you cannot really reflect that book into a screenplay. It is simple the writing style, above all, that makes the book great.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
I don't know if these have been mentioned as I didn't go through the thread.
The Mango Season
Song of the Cuckoo Bird...A real trip, this book.
The Vine of Desire
Sister of My Heart
Blasphemy by Tehmina Durrani....still have to read My Feudal Lord
Video
The Twentieth Wife
The White Tiger.....Did not finish this one, will revisit it again maybe because it grips you from the start.
Some I liked more than others. And many more titles that escape my mind.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Do revisit Moth Smoke - Tell me how you like it.
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Just finished Two States by Chetan Bhagat
Literary elites may scoff at his style. I like it. Book was good. Small. So devourable (for Muniya)
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Anything from Sir VS Naipaul. I sometimes read his passages for enlightenment sake :)
Re: Contemporary South-Asian Lit. recommendations
Working on Lowlands Jhumpa Lahiri. Pretty good so far.
