Contaminated Water Kills 12 in Sindh

The result of stopping fresh water supply to Sindh by Punjab has meant that the lower Indus is getting contaminated and leading to deaths of local people. Not that anyone in Punjab cares. Go on, keep on building thal canal, kalabagh dam, munda dam. It’s ok, we don’t mind.

HYDERABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Contaminated water from a state-run reservoir has killed at least 12 people and made 2,000 ill in southern Pakistan, officials said Tuesday.

Naeem Ishtiaq, health minister for the southern province of Sindh, said about 2,000 people had been admitted to hospital in Hyderabad after consuming water from Manchar Lake, which lies just outside the city.

He said at least eight people had died in the past three days. Other officials said four more had died before reaching hospital.

The report said that the quality of drinking water would improve if the supply of fresh water from the Sukkur Barrage continued. The specialists, however, cautioned that the colour of water was still slightly greenish-blue indicating presence of algae flora, a substance injurious to health. They advised people to boil water before drinking, at least for a couple of days.

They forgot to mention that who is behind stopping fresh water from Sukkur Barrage.

How do you attach pics here?

very unfortunate :/

but Imdad, if water is avlbl locally, then shouldn't efforts be made to purify it on site? i mean isn't this the responsibility of the Hyderabad Water Supply Board...

is mein Punjab ka kya Qusoor hae?

What will they do? We don't have any large water purification plant for all the villages in Sindh. Only fresh water from upstream can help the situation, but on top of the existing shortage, Punjab wants to build mroe dams and canals to divert whatever water is remaining in the Indus. How can anyoen in Sindh trust the government of Pakistan will safeguard there water rights when it is ruled by Punjab-dominated army. Of course Punjabis will look out for Punjab, like Sindhis do for Sindh. It is human nature.

Imdad bhai, Musharraf is not Punjabi

very sad news.

.The water situation in Pakistan will get worse, not only because of less water flow in the river due to dams, but also because of all the chemical and sewerage waste being dumped in the river. This will be a serious threat to drinkable water not only in Pakistan but throughout the world. Unfortunately Sindh located at the lower end of Indus has to bear the brunt. These folks have been drinking water from the same source for ages, but now due to pollution they have suffered. The Government should take immediate steps to stop sewerage flow into the rivers otherwise this type of calamity will multiply.

Who can blame the govnt for not providing clean water to its people? It's not like they have enough money to build nuclear weapons and missiles!
