Contacts

Don’t you think it sucks when someone gets a job because they have contacts even though they’re probably not the brightest of candidates?

For example, we had to go through 3 phases before we were selected for our internships… CV selection, interview, and reference from lecturers. I met 5 other student interns in the same company who didn’t have to go through any of these phases … they were all daughters of people working there (mostly directors!) … why didn’t they have to go through the same process as everyone else??

:nahi: so unfair!

Most of us working like crazy in college are probably going to be struggling after we leave… trying to find a job… and someone else who hasn’t really done much in college, isn’t the brightest, doesn’t have the best results is still going to get a job just because he/she has great contacts!

:nahi: so unfair (2) !

Re: Contacts

lol I thought you meant wearing contacts… :hehe:

lol

nope

Re: Contacts

It agree it's not fair if a less qualified individual is hired. But using your contacts is expected - that's what networking is all about.

From an employer's point of view they would rather hire someone that an existing employee can vouch for.

Key here is to network, network, network!

but the employers should hire the best candidate... not the best known.

Re: Contacts

Where there is competition, struggle to achieve some aims then people do use contacts. Its common even. You cant directly say unfair but its legal. Just for an example if a company have to sell products or if you want to get the tender of some company even then contacts works. Which is also labeled as legal. People do have weekend parties, official gatherings and all such things which has nothing directly to do with the product you are involve in but for contacts.

Same is the case with the contacts regarding one person.

:hinna: i knowz its all legal… and so common… and even required in times of competition… but its still unfair… why should a person, who’s been getting away with dossing college all those years, get a job before another who’s been working so hard?

PS: Do people not feel guilty when they get a job, not on the basis of their capabilites, but because someone else put in a request for them?

Re: Contacts

^^ Humans want to "progress" fair or unfair, many dont think on it. Also it is said that now a days if you remain sincere you can only survive but if you are crook you can be wealthy.

how true!

:nahi: so unfair (3) !

I got two interviews for jobs based on a reference from a relative and yes I did feel guilty in the second instance because I had applied for another job at the same firm and no one had responded when I applied on my own. I made a point of not mentioning who referred me for the position when I was hired for the position because I didn't want to be accused of being hired based on nepotism (the relative did not have a role in the hiring decision - he just introduced me to the head of one of the partner departments).

I was offered a 9-month contract after two interviews (and a pretty solid resume). The contract position was made full-time within 4 months and to this day, the guy who hired me pats himself on the back for his decision (I don't report to him anymore).

Using contacts in most cases does not mean you are ensured the job - it merely means that your resume will be pushed to the top of the pile for consideration. Most firms still hire and retain employees based on merit.

Re: Contacts

Director work hard to make sure that the company can afford to hire interns. So they have the first right on those internships. :silly:

It is company’s way of making sure that loyalty of Directors is rewarded properly. Those candidates are not duffers or goofs they have degrees as other candidate plus an extra qualification.

^ that is just a lame excuse.

So just because we want to keep our current employees happy we should hire their relatives, whether they deserve the position or not?

Trust me, one of the girls (director's daughters) was actually a "goof" . she told me herself how she had to repeat ALL her exams that year.. she was at the same level as everyone else with regards to education and experience... She didn't have anything extra besides her father's name... and she was chosen for the internship without having to go through any selection process...

Re: Contacts

Current employees are the ones who made the company successful and they make sure that company stays that way forever. Period. :thainga:

Most of the street smart people are not good at studies. Street smart people are good workers , executives and businessmen. Most high achiever in life were not good at studies.
She was smart enough to know that she can get that internship because her father was a director there. There is nothing wrong with it. If this guy is an owner director , one day she will inherit the company , what can you do about it ? :snooty:

:naak: Allah mian puche ga sub nu… unfair creatures!

We as Muslim believe that Allah mian will accept sifarish of our Prophet(SAW) . So sifarish is not unislamic. Is it ?

no but Allah mian knows who’s more deserving. :snooty: he’ll sort out the more deserving and hard working candidates himself even if they don’t have director abbas
