I myself was a heavily heavily constipated kid and my childhood memories consist of constant suppositories, severe bleeding and traumatic bathroom episodes.
My ammi tried her best and I wish we had known at that time what I know now, things would have turned out different but ammi believed the doctors always knew best and so the list of meds I took was enormous.
My pregnancy and after delivery was also painful for the longest time because of severe constipation. And after talking to multiple parents I see that is a problem that a lot of us face.
I was determined that I would do all that I can (get myself the knowledge) to help my child not have constipation. So here is a list of things that work for different ppl.
When you are trying to overcome constipation with your children try something out for a week and see how it affects your child. This stuff comes in handy once your toddler eats regular food.
Kishmish (you can place this in small cups so that kids can reach and eat them while playing )
Grapes (a couple a day should do the trick)
Oranges (make sure they eat the orange the fibre helps stuck stuff get out)
apples (with the skin)
pears
amrood (guava) Make sure you take out the seeds or try to get the juice that does not have too much sugar in it.
Watermelon
WATER - keep your child hydrated, even when they are constipated the water lets the stool not be too hard and thus less painful and traumatic for child and mother.
For some ppl bananas work but for me and my child bananas make us constipated.
Hope this helps you guys. Also for breastfeeding moms pls pls keep a very sharp eye on your own diet. Your diet can cause gas troubles and constipation in your infant. It is just a few months of watching the diet which is far far easier than dealing with a baby who gets gassy or has trouble with a bowel movement.
Please remember me and my family in your duaas and feel free to add things and tips that have worked for you.
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
my poor bunny had such a hard time for the first two years of her life. it really made me cry. she still has difficult days now, but it's not as bad. she ate all the right foods. it didn't help.
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
awwwwwww i can understand my baby gets constipated very easily.........
here it is wht i have to do
rice just once a week
no bananas at all
either apple or pear daily
lots of fluids
not more than 24 ounces of cow milk in 24 hrs.
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
recently my son start having this problem....my doctor suggested pear juice and it helped alot ....
remedy for an adult is to add teaspoon of olive or almond oil in a cup of warm milk and drink it before going to bed ....next morning u will be 'faarigh, khul kay' :D
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
I think doctors now are different OP.
I have seen this advice been given - 1. encourage your child not to hold, as soon as they need to go encourage them to - if they are old enough of course.
HYDRATION is the key.
High fibre diets i.e. lots of fruits and veges because it encourages bowel movements. A childs bowel is immature it does not have full motility yet it needs to be trained with fibre.
Movement - with babies do the bicycle movemets with their legs, encourage you kid to be active.
Position - a squatting position allows for easier movements - so a thing you put on the floor rather than toilet seat.
If none of these work only then laxatives from the doc but its not encouraged. Neither is caster oil
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
bananas are tricky... neem hakeem say fully ripe turning brown banana is good for constipatoin.. the raw banana is good for diarrohea.
prune juice!
oatmeal.
ghutti by hamdard is a blend of herbs that work as a very very gentle laxative if you can even call it that... its for all stomach ailments in babies and kids. this works wonders when my son has eaten a banana (immediate constipation for him)...
sometimes constipation is chronic and nothign will help. some kids suffer from this and grow out of it as they grow up.
teething! my sil's son had severe constipation until he turned 2... SEVERE... bleeding from teh anus and all. why? cuz he was teething. it went away just like that the day he popped his molars. now its a smooth sailing.
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
ahhhh.. seems that you are narrating my story automne... i used to be the same type of kid... but things gets gradually better off when i grew up... i am still constipated..but for me prunes works well
coming to by daughter who is 2yrs old.. she is extremelyyyy constipated... she cried and tried to put hard everytime she tries to poo. i used to give benefibre mixed in milk. but that too in small amount of milk (bcoz it thickens out after some time).. and fruitsss
Yesternight I was reading this and wallah today morning I find out that my 1month is highly constipated..she hadnt pooped in three days..I thought its normal..but today she was badly constipated and in pain:( she was crying badly with pain and trying to push something out..twisting and turning..i checked to see she is pooping but with great difficulty..and it was hard and dark green(sorry for being so visual)
:(
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
Gobi, channay, and anything that prevents you from having a regular bowel movement. I was extra careful while bf and I also used to eat the things that helped keep my constipation away.

my two weeks old is also heavily concipated......specialy after breast feedin she she was crying and try to push badly but nothing happened...she got calmed only after passing some gas
i have tried hamdard ghutti, colic drops but nothing working 4 her...i m also taking the boil water with ajwain and saunf
bytheway the moms who have elder children with constipasion try to give them the milk boiled with a teaspoon of saunf it realy helped 4 my 3 and 4 year conspitated kids
My mom told me to grind ilaichi k dane and misri together..express milk 1tspn..mix only a bit of the powder in the milk..then give it to ur baby..it helped mine..
My aunt's kid is exclusively formula fed..when she boils water for her baby she puts one ilaichi to boil with the water..that helped him with constipation
As for babies 6months above(also for adults too)..amaldaas is a desi herb which is grated to get a bit of powder from it..eating that helps with constipation
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
I guess different things suit different babies, but for my one, what worked magic (and almsot instantly) was mangoes! just sucking on the ghutly for a bit was enough to get her bowels to move.
Also, my Dr suggested 1tbsp honey in say 2 ounce luke warm water... that helped too (or sugar water/ pancake syrup mix if the baby is less then 1 year old).
Re: Constipation in Kids and some possible solutions
amrood(guava)with seeds works like magic...no matter how old r u or ur child....i tried it many times with my kids it never failed
i dont now how its seeds r harmful
