why do they exist? is it becuase of absense of substantial evidence to support a fact so our mind fills the blanks and an urban legend emerges OR it’s becuase of our desires to believe what we percieve as fact and we compile an alternate set of “facts” and supporting “evidence”?
what is your take on it?

I think it is a lot to do with the mind and questions which may remain unanswered, the void is filled with these theories. Urban legends exist in every culture. Our own has so many legends/old wives tales that have been passed on for so many generations they begin to sound credible/realistic just because of their longeivity. Sometimes we have no other tangible facts/answers that we use these theories to fill in the blanks till there is evidence to suggest otherwise.

Because only humans have the capacity to tell and spin stories , myths , rumors etc.
