Considering International job offers

If you were offered an international job role out of the blue , what would your thought process be? and what would be challenges to consider before accepting such a role?

Re: Considering International job offers

I would for sure. Currently I'm towards the end of my PhD and looking for a job. Right now I have offers from post doc in Canada and France but I want to find a place in the Industry. I'm keeping my options open. I have experience of both places but I wouldn't mind going to USA, Germany, Sweden or even Japan, Australia.

When you are in early stage of your career, this should not be an issue. I know for some people, with family and kids, it becomes difficult but for me the good thing is that I'm single and don't have to take into account my family in such matters.

My thought process would be to weigh the pros and cons of the job, how stable it is, is it something that I would enjoy doing over a long period of time and things like that but surely it will be different for each individual.

Re: Considering International job offers

i have entertained those and personally found the thought process almost paralyzing because there were/are so many tangible and intangible variables to consider ....
so i am female, married and now with two kids under 5.
things that i considered ......

  1. compensation and potential for advancement: is that really adequate enough for me to leave my current job and brave all the difficulties of an international move.
  2. employment status/opportunities for spouse
  3. education for kids ... caliber of education, types of schools, reputation of school and whether degree from abroad are accepted fully in home country once/if I were to return. variety/accessibility of extracurricular activities for kids
  4. safety and prevalent culture/language/religion and general life style of the new country
  5. distance from family/friends
  6. weather

Re: Considering International job offers

For me even moving to another state is devastating, let alone country. It depends upon the individual and yes the age of the kids if you have family. It's harder with older kids. Also for me if there are Pakistanis in the other place is a big consideration, type of schools, weather and if course cost of living. We had a job offer from San Diego and even one from LA but tempting as these were cost of higher living made me say no.

Re: Considering International job offers

I have always considered taking a teaching post in Dubai but main reason I haven't is due to being too far from my family, I still live in the same house i grew up in with my parents even though I'm married with 3 kids. I have never moved house never mind city or country, so it would be very hard.

Though I am seriously considering it at the moment fot the start of the next school year because my kids are still quite young and it would be easier for them to adjust and start school there. There are plenty of international schools there so no worry about qualifications and I would really like them to go to an islamic school and this is my main concern at the moment as there is nothing available where I am now and very few Muslims. The jobs offered there give free accommodation and flights home. But the distance is my main concern with sick parents.

The weather and activities available are all plus points. As well as it being safe.

Another thing stopping me is if hubby would be able to find employment there or start up a business like he currently has. I realise now that I should have made his move before I had the kids as will be a big adjustment for us all. I am currently looking into child are available there as my younger 2 are not of school age yet so I have to look at all options. I have never left my kids with anyone other than my mum, so that thought is quite scary.

Re: Considering International job offers

My friends who live there have reliable nannies.

Re: Considering International job offers

Was thinking of getting a nanny as I'm sure they are more readily available there than where I am now. I think we would have a much higher standard of living there. If you have anymore info could u PM me. Things like cost of nanny etc.

Think I need to update my CV and start looking for jobs. Only other thing is that most of the teaching jobs are for single people, not families.

Re: Considering International job offers

Fefe, my friend is in Abu Dhabi, I think costs are around 1400 dirhams a month but rents in Dubai, Abu Dhabi are high. I can ask and pm you with more info if Ican get any. Where are you based now? I know these places do place a high value on American education and experience so you and your husband could possibly get a good job there. But thing is you would not get citizen ship as you know and after a number of years would have to return. So would have to think about how employable you would be in the US ( if you are there) after you return.

Peace sister @Chicken_Biryani

Evaluate the following:

The tax expenditures or savings
The comparative lifestyle: You can use this website it is very good …

Cost of Living

Future prospects - i.e. strategic gains
Net Income
Other cultural perks
Proximity for travel and tourism

Ensure you have a good package … at least one flight back home once every year, all family members if family package is included.

Working hours - You don’t want to be worked in to the ground
Holiday entitlement

For example a net reduction of income from UK to middle east of may be 10% would still demand much higher standard of living and end up saving you more in the long run. However, since everything is private in the middle east you need to calculate where that line exists between income and lifestyle. Like for like between Qatar and UK in terms of income for example would be £55k per annum in Qatar would be similar to a £50k per annum lifestyle in the UK. But the overall package will affect this … but with just an increase of £15k per annum extra in Qatar (i.e. £70k) the relative increase is much greater in lifestyle taking you to an equivalent of £150k per annum in the UK. So there is a clear cross-over of lifestyle because services and facilities are not available at the same rate as in the UK.

Other considerations would be existing home country property rent or no rent … etc …

Re: Considering International job offers

I'm in the UK.

There really is so much to consider, was thinking about the citizenship part.

Re: Considering International job offers

Are you a UK citizen? If so, you may be entitled to being it's down the road. My dad moved back to the Uk after living many years in Pakistan and is living a retired life there. People who live in the Middle East eventually have to go back to their country of citizenship. Make sure you understand that.

Re: Considering International job offers

^ That's a good point ... While living in the Middle East it is important that you send National Insurance contributions to the HMRC in order to enjoy a proper pension when you return to the UK.

Re: Considering International job offers

Not only that, but the visa complications your children will run into once they hit 21+. In Saudi, this used to be a huge concern and a problem for parents.

Re: Considering International job offers

What do the kids do then?

Re: Considering International job offers

They have to either get jobs in Saudi and transfer their sponsors to the employer or leave the country and go back "home" ... which technically is their parent's home.

Re: Considering International job offers

Not sure if the same is true for other Gulf countries though!

Re: Considering International job offers

Yes it is the same in Qatar ... they may be saved if their home country is in war which means they can apply for asylum.

Re: Considering International job offers

Someone I know lives in Bahrain and his parents used to live with him too. His dad passed away but his mother ( and his wife and kids) still lives with him.

Re: Considering International job offers

Well, you shouldn't base your decisions on what you have heard. Find out accurate information before making a big decision. Bahrain has a special case where they grant citizenship to some Pakistanis. But, a special case, not for everyone.

Although, working in the Gulf would be awesome. Chill job, chill hours, just relaxation and aaraam.
