Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

After the House passed a bill last week calling for a withdraw the Senate has done the same, 51-47.

Troops would start withdrawing in 4 months and complete the withdraw by March 31st 2008.

Bush has promised to Veto the bill, something he has only done once, which was to kill additional funding for stem cell research.

wow, but can dems over turn a veto? I dont think that they will be able to.
thoughts?

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

No they can't, but funding for the Iraq war will is going to run out, around June 1st, and that money needs to come from somewhere. Now the Dems are not going to leave the troops high and dry but Bush is going to be forced to compromise, the Dems have the public backing them and his course in Iraq has proved wrong, I don't see how he can win a showdown with these facts facing him.

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Democratic-controlled Senate ignored a veto threat and voted Thursday for a bill requiring President Bush to start withdrawing combat troops from Iraq within four months, dealing a sharp rebuke to a wartime commander in chief.
In a mostly party line 51-47 vote, the Senate signed off on a bill providing $122 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also orders Bush to begin withdrawing troops within 120 days of passage while setting a nonbinding goal of ending combat operations by March 31, 2008.
The vote came shortly after Bush, in a move that his aides said was unprecedented, invited all House Republicans to the White House to appear with him in a sort of pep rally to bolster his position in the continuing war policy fight.
“We stand united in saying loud and clear that when we’ve got a troop in harm’s way, we expect that troop to be fully funded,” Bush said, surrounded by Republicans on the North Portico, “and we got commanders making tough decisions on the ground, we expect there to be no strings on our commanders.”
“We expect the Congress to be wise about how they spend the people’s money,” he said.

“We expect the Congress to be wise about how they spend the people’s money,” he said. Is he able to say this with a stright face after all the money Bush has dumped into Iraq?

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

How can he say we *expect that troop to be fully funded *when he sent them into harm's way with substandard equipment and protection?

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

semi I dont understand that either. when I heard about soldiers families traising funds so they can send body armour to their soldier, i was just shocked.

How can we dump these kids, and I mean kids, 18, 19, 20 year old without proper equipment in that area.

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

I don't get it. But I don't get how Bush claims the high ground on this issue, or really any issue. I am so disillusioned with the US govt AND the American public who are putting up with this crap. Bush is acting like this is a friggin monarchy. HE is resonsible for putting these kids in harms way. HE is responsible for no end game. He is responsible for them having substandard safety equipment. HE is screwing everything up and has the audacity to claim the Congress doesn't have the right to right the ship he is sinking.

I concur. I also wonder how the evangelical base constinues to support this policy

As you sow so shall you reap ... The American people have to harvest the crop for bringing an Idiot into presidency twice.

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

^unfortunately the whole world is suffering frm the US bringing an Idiot into presidency twice.

Re: Congress Passes Bill to Bring Troops Home, End Iraq War

But pulling troop is NOT a solution now....at least from middle east point of view till the time Iraq is stabilized and makes itself stand on it's own, no matter how many years it take...

Bush did a mistake by invading Iraq...but that's a history...another mistake of pulling out can't correct that mistake.

I think Bush is right here by not pulling out the troops, as a President, only he can know the best what are the stakes in Iraq and leaving Iraq like this will make it worse than Taliban time Afghanistan, only this time both Al-Qaeda Inc. and Mahdi Army plus Irani will prosper here.
