Yeah! Even though its pointless putting the banner, since most of us being abroad didnt get to celebrate it, but I liked the way how certain cyber-mollahs got offended by this Check the feedback forum
The festival sounds like a great time, I'd like to see this Pakistani cultural ritual spread to the states and elsewhere, such festivals show Pakistan in a positive light.
Those fundamentalists against such things shows us how dangerous they can be if given they chance to be in charge.

we tried arranging it here in melbourne, but i dont think anything came out of it... i heard a rumour that sydney celebrates basant... so not fair!
cultural and religious celebrations should be kept separate! i wish i could celebrate holi..

well the first thing I thought when I saw the banner just now is 'holi'. the banner is very cool and colorful. Basant is celebrated in gujrat and punjab, but i wish in delhi they celebrated it like the lahoris! ooh i'm jealous.
There can be no match to Basant in Lahore. Though I haven't seen Basant in 10 years but I do remember few Basants when I was in Lahore. Paichay saichay lagana to roze ka mash-ghala thaa .....
It is the night before the Basant day. People decorate their roof tops with lighting arrangements, Barbecue, sound systems and loads of Gudda n Dour
The sky is lit-up with high intensity lights so that there is no difficuty in flying a kite and seeing it properly. Most of the kites are of white color for more visibility.
The fun begins shortly after sunset and goes till late at night.
** Basant Day**

The day starts slowly but at noon it gets in full swing. People are ready for some real action. :roman:
Party at one roof top is ready for a * Paicha* (the duel of two kites)
with all their buddies ready hooting and dance on drum beat if they are the winner in that paicha.
The mere sight of this tussle is so amuzing for onlooker immagine how much fun it would be if you are a part of it.
The food and dance and and kite flying goes all day long. In the afternoon, people fly huge kites starting from sizes of 5x5 ft and it goes to 10x10 ft or even bigger. Flying these gaint kites is quite a serious business. If the wind is blowing then holding these kites requires a lot of power.

Basant Evening and Fireworks
The sky is filled with colors and gaint kites till the sunset. After the sunset the bonanza of firework begins from all corners of the city. It is a sight to watch. somewhere you can see mini hot air baloon. They are called Qandeel(lamps). They are light weight and go up like a baloon.
Then at night this extravaganza ends after about 20 hours of fun

utd, the fundamentalists are in a minority through most of Pakistan but they make a lot of noise. IMO they give a totally false impression of the country which is a shame.
Code_Red pretty good pics but I haven't seen any of spotlights on a rooftop at night yet which would really capture the atmosphere.

Channji, my brother called me from Lahore and he told me that he Looted a Guddi that seemed to have come from Amratsar. I asked him to keep it in a safe place until summer when I am visiting there. He also mentioned that the Guddi has nice Kamans with multi-color Pouchal. Can’t wait to get my hands on that.

Madhanee,
I propose the official song for Basant:
Guddi wangooN ajj mainu sajjna,
udayee ja udayee ja udayee jaa
If I am not wrong... wind during this time of the year is usually from west to eastwards...called pachhoN di hawa.(pachham waloN aundi hawa)...the one during monsoon is puray di hawa..Purab di hawa, from East.
yaar I remember collecting guddis coming from Lahore during Basant to our fields...kiya maza aunda si...actually back in 70's and 80's we did not know Lahore is so hip about Basant..we thought it were some crazy guys in the next village in Pakistan who saw us flying kites and did their own thing...but now this Basant thing is going to explode all over Punjab...It was not celebrated with lot of fanfare on Indian side until lately. This is teh festival that hs hit chord with common people...they want to have fun and they want to enjoy life if mullah or bhais or pandts don't like it too bad for them.
