Congenital Joints Anomalies

So my youngest SIL(my age) gave birth to her second child,a baby boy, today and it is 5 weeks before the expected date of delivery. The baby is very beautiful MA, looks fine and not like a premature at all BUT i was totally shocked to see his limbs. The knee joint was hyperextended badly, bilaterally and the feet were internally rotated…thw wrists were internally twisted too,but comes back to normal position when forced. Knee joints are very rigid though..we all had an upset time ofcourse but tried to cheer her and my mil up. Pediatric orthopedic consultant advised an x-ray and some physiotherapy exercises. He said they might need to put a splint cast for knee next wekk so it is slightly flexed. The condition is Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Her pregnancy was all normal apparently (she is a doctor too) and had regular follow ups. Maybe since the bones are fine,it didnt come in an USG.

I cannot get my mind off it and really want to know if someone has seen any such condition and knows more about it? :frowning:

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

My baby was diagnosed with anal atresia when he was just 22 weeks gestational. Limb abnormalities are associated with this condition. Not only limb but there are several other conditions associated with it. I am sure you know since you are a doctor. When he was diagnosed, I thought it was the most miserable thing that happened to me. I was always depressed. I had MRI done and I had an ultrasound every two weeks to monitor the baby. At some point later though in my pregnancy, the doctors told me that everything seemed fine .. they checked limbs, heart, spine at every ultrasound. My baby was born perfect Alhamdulliah. I think sometimes these conditions are over diagnosed and sometimes under. To be honest I don't think conditions like these are easy to miss if ultrasound is done properly. Since mine was diagnosed very early, I had a surgeon who was ready in case my baby needed surgery.

Have you done research to see the treatment options. I went as far as contacting the pioneer in treating anal atresia. I was devastated and I contacted the person who came up with the surgery for such children. He replied each time within few seconds of getting my emails and also pointed out at the possibility of an over diagnosed case. The hospital I delivered at happened to be the same hospital this doctor got training from. It was a relief. I am sure if you do research you'll find treatments and good doctors.

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

My baby was five weeks early too with no issues. But she was born with her feet turned inward. The doctor referred us to an ortho. They weren't worried about her feet but her hips (hip dysplasia). Thankfully Alhamdullallah everything was fine, tho I do know people whose babies needed to wear various harnesses, and have recovered from hip dysplasia. The earlier t is addressed the better.

For the feet, doctors advised regularly extending and massaging the legs into the correct position. It corrected without much trouble.

Was the baby breach?

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

Spiral: Alhamdulillah all was fine with your baby at birth MA. We are looking for options too.

Sahar02: no, he was not breach. I am going back to the hospital in an hour now. The consultant might visit back and we'll see what he has to say.

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

there was a baby born in our family some years back who did not cried when he was born. the family was so jahil that they did not take him to doctor till they got over with all the rituals and rasams. he had the same condition with his feet. he was treated for some time then and I have heard that he is fine now.

plus , premature babies are beautiful and fine too. there is nothing wrong about being born as a premature child. they are not ugly.

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

^ that is CP (cerebral palsy) and it causes similar malformations but that is related to nervous system. May Allah grant everyone with healthy babies. I just wish people come out of praying for a baby BOY when they should pray for a normal healthy BABY. My sil's FIL made a stupid coment when i congratulated him yesterday..he said ' hai tau beta lekin theek nahin hai bilkul' and i felt like yelling at him that uski maa see poochhayn usko kitna pyara hai jesa bhi hai..jaahil !

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

diamond - my babies never cried when they were born, its not a must.

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

I so agree .. ppl should pray for a healthy baby, that was my fear thats why I never prayed for a boy but a healthy baby all times.
May Allah grant the innocent baby boy a healthy and normal life. My heart sank when I read ur first post.

Re: Congenital Joints Anomalies

really ! I thought its necessary for babies to cry. when my daughter was born I was unconscious and when I woke up my nurse started telling me about my daughter and one thing she mentioned was that she came out crying and they did not have to make her cry. may be my knowledge is weak :(
