Confusion Problems What would you do?

this is yet another halal haram post.

what would you do about halal haram, if you were a masters student at purdue which is located in the city (actually a “pind”) of west lafayette (ever heard of that?)?

there was only one restaurant in the whole locality which serves halal food. one time meal there would cost you $10.

plus there was only one shop selling halal meat.

plus you were living in the university residence where cooking is not allowed (absolutely not).

plus you were taking 9 credit hours per semester.
plus you were a teaching assistant who had to work at least 20 hours per week.

implying that even if cooking was allowed you would not be left any time, i mean any time at all, to do it.

i would appreciate sincere advice. i dont go to mcdonalds, taco bell due to some irresistable desire. its a need. theres no way out.

and sometimes listening to people showing extreme contempt for those who are in situation like this, really hurts.

Assuming you have read all the discussion on halal-haram in the other thread… you don’t have a case for eating non-zabeeha meat, even with all the conditions you have stated.

This is my opinion. Get an authentic one from a religious scholar, if you wish.

You can eat vegetables and seafood. One of my friends actually lived on Subway’s Tuna sandwich for 1.5 months (twice a day). I am sure there are plenty of cheap vege outlets there… or fish/prawns etc. And if you wish to eat meat, once in a while, you can cook it on the weekends or something.

But then again, this is if you feel that the islamic evidence for prohibition of meats slaughtered by christians is stronger than the evidence for permissibility.

If you decide that the islamic evidence allowing meats by christians is strong enough, then there is no issue… and you can eat the regular meats available in the markets…or whatever.

Bro. faith is in your heart … others can only tell you their opinions. In the end it will be YOU answerable to Allah.

So ask your conscious, and do what you think is best … Allah indeed is very forgiving and merciful!

Humanity First! Though I give you the right to disagree …

pristine bro i am talking here about spending one and a half more years like this. i mean should i be preparing myself to live on vege for all this time. is the ruling against this thing is that strict?

and ahmedjee, alright its a question of concious but what if i indeed true to my concious, end up making a wrong decision?

i think i have to do some serious thinking.

The rules have been laid out - the question, from a Hindu standpoint, is "do you live to eat, or eat to live?"

If eating is only for sustenance, and not for pleasure's sake, then a vegetarian diet, supplemented by occasional halal meats when available, is the only choice.

If, instead, you derive an irrevocable pleasure from meat, then life kinda sucks.

As Pristine said, it all depends on how important halal/haram is to you.

Scratch:

I don't know how I missed your post. The one thing that makes me look up to Muslims is the value and concern they attach to the meat they eat/don't eat.

Scratch, it is difficult. But is not impossible. There are many many vegetarian Indians here at my univ, who don't eat meat at all.

To many americans, it would seem impossible to live like that and many wouldn't even believe that. But in these 5 years, I have found so many things that we can eat without meat in almost every restaurant and still enjoy my food and life. This may not exactly be what you are looking for, but I am sharing this with you to get some idea of how to live on the food you choose and not the food you get.

People where I studied took 19 graduate credit hours, had research assistantships (some times worked at restaurants) and still managed to eat the food they chose and not what they had to.

Now, if you eat sea food, then the options increase a lot more.

McDonalds: (Last choice. Mcdonalds sucks in these terms) You can eat almost any burger without meat. Just ask them without meat.

Taco bell: Ask for any item, just tell them to replace the meat with beans. It is as good.

Skyline, gold line or any restaurant that offers Chili: Ask for beans instead of chili.

Subway/Jersy mike/ or any sub joint: They have sea food items, veggie subs, veggie max sub, black bean sub, soups etc..

Penn station - the same above, just tell them to clean the grill to cook the food, and they will do it in front of you.

Pizza joints: All pizza restaurants have atleast one veggie option.

Burgerking: They have sea food items and they also have veggie whopper. It is not listed on the menu, nor an option for him to choose on his machine. But if you tell the counter clerk, he will be able to make it.

TGI fridays, Rincon,Margarita, Don pablos: all these have veggie quesdillas(spelling) and other pasta items that are without meat. They have a lot of sea food items too.

Wendys: They have two pitas without meat.

In addition to this, there are a whole bunch of food items that is available at grocery stores that you can microwave at the library snack joint and eat.

Chipotle: has veggie options

There are som many chinese, thai restaurants, that provide meatfree items or sea food items. Just remember to tell them (twice) to the cook using plain water, instead of chicken broth.

Ponderosas: have a huge buffet, where you cannot eat all the vegetarian items in one sitting.

Waffle house: Hashbrowns, waffles drinks..

One word of caution: Whenever you switch one item for meat, just remember to check the food, if the cook had remembered the instruction.

Scratch, I empathise with you, but I encourage you to stick to your values, come what may.
