Yeah, but you don’t always see the Kaur or Singh written. In school, most students are just registered as Singh for their last name because they use the same last name as their dads. It’s only more recently that other Sikh last names are being used - like Atwal, Chabba, Toor and then the Kaur or the Singh is used as a middle name.
And actually, I remember reading an article that said that Sikh people have a baptismal ceremony and they are expected to give up their family names and take on Singh or Kaur as their identifying names.
