Confiding a need to excel - a good thing or a bad

whenever a scholar or a employee expresses need to be given opportunity to excel in their fields, do normally people handle this eagerness in good and understanding way or do they normally misunderstand the inner motive of the scholar or the employee?

there is only so much that a person can wait to be handed down an opportunity, and when it comes, maybe that person would lose all will and interest to excel.

ask for opportunity, if your superior is a well adjusted individual they will try to help. enthusiasm is seen as positive, as long as it comes with capability ..or willingness and ability to become capable.
