Confederation Bridge

An integral part of the Trans Canada Highway network, the 12.9 kilometre Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge over ice-covered waters in the world. Officially opened on May 31, 1997, this historic landmark carries two lanes of traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Confederation Bridge joins the provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, Canada and forms part of the Trans Canada Highway—making travelling to and from either province simple and convenient. As a gateway to Canada’s Island, Prince Edward Island, the Bridge links you to a multitude of festivals and events, activities, and places to visit. Once you’re on the Island, the Bridge leads you back to the many adventures and experiences that New Brunswick and the mainland has to offer. Confederation Bridge is the convenient connector for the Maritime Provinces as it’s less than a half hour from Nova Scotia.

The Bridge uses state-of-the-art design and technology to make your travelling experience a pleasant one. Confederation Bridge is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides continuous Bridge Patrol and Monitoring for your safety, including the use of video camera surveillance. Also, telephone emergency call boxes are situated all along the Bridge. Our electrical system features street and traffic lights, electronic message and speed signs, and is supported by an uninterruptible power source.
