Should condolences for pets be part of our culture and if you have to do a condolence for a pet how will you do it.

The loss of a pet elicits a wide spectrum of feelings. For anyone who has a pet, losing one, at the very least, leaves a void. For some, the loss of a pet is as devastating as losing a human family member. Those who don't have pets may not understand the grief over an animal--some may roll their eyes, some shake their heads. Yet, for the bereaved, the feelings are the same regardless of the source, and whatever your feelings are, a heartfelt note of condolence after the loss of a pet is sure to be appreciated.
I'm so sorry to hear that Roo died in an accident. I know how much he meant to you.
You spoke of Roo so often, I feel like I knew him myself. He was a lucky dog to be rescued by such a caring person as you.
I remember how sad I was when my dog Buttons died, and I know how hard this must be for you. I'll call you on the weekend to see how you're doing.
I am thinking of you as you grieve for Roo.

A handwritten note may be a rarity in these days of electronic communication, but it is a much more personal touch.
Send the condolence within a week or two, the time a grieving pet lover will need your support most.
Don't talk about getting another pet to replace the one lost---some people require just as much time to grieve a pet as to grieve any family member. Even if they don't, they are probably not ready to consider a new pet just yet.
