Concept of 'Mardangi' in different Cultures?

How does it vary from culture to culture?

What makes ‘a man’ ‘real man’ in different societies?

Re: Concept of 'Mardangi' in different Cultures?

In our culture, the primary thing that defines a "real man" is being able to provide for and protect one's family. Having honour, bravery, loyalty, and keeping one's word is also key. There are other things as well but those are a bit more relative and variable.

Re: Concept of ‘Mardangi’ in different Cultures?

There is no written code of *Mardangi *in my culture… but the attributes which you described in your post are common in every culture (Mardangi)

Re: Concept of ‘Mardangi’ in different Cultures?

Yes, I quite agree. I think the same is true in all cultures for the most part. I do think that different cultures interpret these attributes differently though.

I must say though, there are certain things we tend to overemphasise.

Re: Concept of ‘Mardangi’ in different Cultures?

It may possible that other culture are not so explicit on those issues specially honor… but they also worried about those things… :5:

Yes, that is what I meant. The overall concepts are pretty much the same in all cultures. However, what certain qualities specifically entail may differ among different cultures.

Re: Concept of ‘Mardangi’ in different Cultures?

tahts why they opt for Karo-kari and Wani to show their mardangi :bummer:

Re: Concept of 'Mardangi' in different Cultures?

In west, ladies are also earning bread and butter for their families and hence meeting criteria of 'to provide for and protect one's family'. So, they are challenging the typical male dominated societies by doing acts which fall under mardangi.

On other hand a lady can be brave, are generally more loyal than males and they do show commitment to promises. This shows that they can show the attributes of 'mardangi'.

Re: Concept of 'Mardangi' in different Cultures?

The expectation that men possess these attributes is not to say that these attributes are exclusive to men or that only men possess them. Of course, women can also possess bravery, loyalty, and commitment and there are some well known examples in history of women who did (read about Malala of Maiwand).

Re: Concept of 'Mardangi' in different Cultures?

I think there more sterotypes of mardangi (showing mardangi) than actual factor determining the mardangi. To be honest, this whole concept of mardangi is just a discrimination against ladies. if you are not mard ( not having mardangi according to some standards of society you live), may be you fall in low category, which is sometimes referred as na-mard and sometimes as zan-kha (again an attack on females).

Re: Concept of ‘Mardangi’ in different Cultures?

Maar-pitai is not considered Mardangi in our pashtun society, its actually opposite. Raising hand on your wife or sisters, is considered sign of beghairati and cowardice.
