who’s writing all these computer viruses? Don’ t they have anything better to do?
Is it only the Anti Virus companies so they have a reason for you to by their products?

May be in the past some AntiVirus companies deliberately released viruses in to the wild, but now creating virus is almost as big of career (or say industry) as the software development industry itself, now there are development teams and companies to make virus (sometimes even Governments and military are involved), read about Stuxnet, Flame, Gauss (Virus created to destroy Iran’s nuclear plants), or Zeus Trojan - the banking Trojan that generates millions in revenue for the hackers/developers. There are companies (mostly based in Russia and China) who makes fake antiviruses to scam people to pay for the removal. There are viruses that encrypts peoples data and asks money to decrypt it, its not about fame or boredom anymore, its a big money making industry. And all these Antivirus are mostly like snake oil, they cant protect you from the treats that are unknown to them. The basic problem is, viruses are programs just like MS Word or Skype, these anti virus companies just have a list of viruses (say bad programs) and how to remove them, that’s it, yes they are improving the detection with things like HIPS and all, still Anti virus is not the answer for threats like APT.

It is akin to the battle against newer and deadlier viruses / bacteria, though you can’t reset / reformat your body unlike a pc.
