is it a lot of work? what about smell? We live in a small country town and with the potential of rodents, bears and even bob cats I want to make sure it’s safe and wont attract any of them!
We are thinking of buying the composting bin from our dept. of public works but I thought if anyone can share their experience?
I compost through most of the year (except for winter). I put most of the decomposed material into my vegetable garden. The humus that comes out is great stuff!
I find that once you get used to it, it is not too much work. I put most of my fruit/vegetable waste into it, plus grass clippings. I periodically add soil from the vegetable garden also (this adds worms!). You may want to remove some seeds before you compost. I had cantaloupe randomly growing in my garden even though I didn’t plant it. The worst part of composting is the mixing part. I have a large plastic bin. I wish that I had a tumbler design.
Although it smells when you open the container (and has flies) it doesn’t permeate throughout the yard. I haven’t seen any critters in it or even attempting to get in.
Here we have to sort all our waste anyway and 4 different bins anyway. One is a food bin which is collected as well (you’re not supposed to put any food waste in the general bin). So in the kitchen next to the large bin, my mum has a small bin which is for food waste. But she has a second small bin exclusively for egg shells and tea bags as these are very good for the bedding and vegetable patch. Peels etc also go in a compost bin in the garden. So the only stuff that goes for the collection are bones and other food waste like that.
