The Qur’an was
revealed to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
During his lifetime, it was collected by scribes under the
supervision of the prophet himself, then, Zayd Bin
Thabit, one of the scribes of the prophet, was
appointed by Abu Bakr (the first caliph after the death
of the prophet) to collect all of sources of the Qur’an
because seventy people who had memorized the Qur’an
and were experts in it, had died during the Day of
Yamama (a battle). Please note that it is commonly said
that Uthman, the third caliph after the prophet’s death,
is the person who collected the Qur’an. But this is a
wrong statement because the Qur’an was collected at
an earlier stage and all what Uthman did in the 25 th
after the Migration was to let people read the Qur’an in
a unified way because the people of Damascus and Iraq
had started arguing on the way they should read it, and
this could have caused a lot of danger. Thank you for
asking and God knows best.
