if you are devoted, dedicated and focused on something, without being obsessed by it, but eager to nurture what the compassion is for, when does compassion become bad for the person who has it?

We can understand this by the Attribute of Allah (SWT) The Compassionate ... and we as humans are required to be compassionate to one another.
I don't think it ever becomes bad to have compassion, but compassion can be given by lifting people up when they are down but also putting them in their place when they are too high.
We need to be compassionate to people in chastisement and in reward. So the compassion will never be bad ... it will be the manner in which compassion is given that can be damaging.
