In my opinion, there's been a competition between indian and pakistani music from the 90's --I'm not talking about the old songs .. I'm talking about the ones that were a little bit modern--... PTV had a program named MCC (I forgot the name) about 6 years ago .. and a lot of talented pakistani pop singers were there --including hadiqa kyani, ali haider, junoon etc -- .. it was pretty good ... but at the same time indian songs are worth recongnition too ... they're just as good to be honest ...

well,it is doubtless that indian music technologyis better than ours. One reason for that is that MUSIC is an important subgect of their education right from school level.
It is also a part of hindu religion which is predominant in india.
In pak,we had only some particular reserved people for singing & music purpose for almost 40 years. It was only in almost last10-15 years when masses were actively engaged in this art.
Indian top musicmaestroes are much better than ours but as far as individual amateur youngsters are concerned,we are equally good to them rather in some cases better.

kaho kaisi kahi ???

I think you have to categorize the music into film songs, pop songs and classical songs.
India is way ahead in the film songs category. The pop songs department was in Pakistans favor for much of the late 80s and 90s, but now lots of good Indian pop singers have emerged as well, and hence, now i would call this category a toss up. And in the classical music category, I think Pakistan has an upper hand, with ghazal singers such as nusrat fateh ali, mehdi hassan, ghulam ali etc. There are some big ghazal singing names in India as well in Jagjit singh and pankhaj udaas, but overall, Pakistan has excelled in this department.

Goku, I know what are you talking about, the program was called Music Channel Charts (MCC)
it was my favirote show, I used to tune in every week to watch it.
I think Pakistani fim songs and Indian film songs are the same, it's the films which are different.
I think Pakistan started the Pop music culture than India followed.
Singers like Shezad Roy, Junaid Jamshed (Vital Signs), Junoon, Ali Haider, The Milestones etc. were the real pop singers.
If you watch Indian pop music programs now days, you will see some Pakistani music ripoff. For example the other day I was watching this program on T.V Asia, the had a ripoff of a Junaid Jamshed song.

Thank you, come again

OK, this might be slightly out of context...could anyone tell me whether any INDIAN has had anything to do with the Pak Film/Music Industry in the past.
We all know that Nusrat F A Khan/Mohsin Khan/Zeba Bhaktiar/Somi Ali/Salma Agha/Mehdi Hassan/Ghulam Ali/etc. etc. have been in India films/music.
Could anyone enlighten me on this ?
Also what is it that what prevents legends like Lata Mangheskar/Jagjit Singh etc. from performing in Pakistan....

no akif.. i donno what u mean by classical music. but if u are going to ask if someone of quality of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi or Pandit Jasraj or Ustad Zakir Hussain or Ustad Bismillah Khan or Pandit Ravishankar or Kishori Amonkar exists in Pakistan, answer is no. i think salamat ali-nazakat ali duo was the last outstanding thing in classical music from pakistan. MAybe that is because it is called 'hindustani classical' and how can 'hindustani classical' be allowed in pakistan.

but in ghazal singing pak wins hands down. there is a wide varitety and outstanding singers.

yes but still copying tunes and wordings from each other is similar on both sides of the border. In such a case the real thrill and enjoyment of a specific song is lost

Oh well what can we do… no wait… we the new generation must do something.. its upto us to get the new talent in this field with their own specific ideas..

we will make our country to prosper in every field…Insh Allah

Hey nobody answered my question in the above post ??

This is because in our culture I mean Islamic culture.. singingand dancing is not highly respected. On the other hand in their culture a kid born is taught about all this stuff. So our people think it a great recognition of their skills if they perform in an environment which is already filled with so many performers.
You’ve got your answer Some 1 happy now

Umair, it feels good to see that atleast someone else knew about the MCC .. i miss those days

Considering the advantages that Indian music has over Pakistani, i.e, it is encouraged rather than discouraged, Pakistani music is very successful. Also, because it is less exposed to western influences it retains a cultural feel that a lot of Indian musicians have lost.

Indian music production is very slick, and despite a load of rubbish being offered as music in films, some good ones do survive. Most hindi film songs are really bad.20% decent, 80% sick-bag content, which considering the resources is not good enough really.

Therefore, I have to conclude that Paki music is better if we are making a comparative study.

I love Xtreme’s logical analysis. His ‘final conclusion’ was ofcourse a ‘foregone conclusion’ because he always starts his analysis backwards.

Lemme see :

Music Industry of Country A :
Churns out 100 songs :
30 songs (i.e 30%) are worth listening to and have adhered to the cultural identity (whatever that means !! )

Music Industry of Country B :
Churns out 6 songs :
3 songs(i.e 50%) are worth listening to and have adhered to the cultural identity (whatever that means !! )

So country B(which in Xtreme’s case happens to be Pakistan) is more matured culturally and its music is doing better than Country A.

And also since Microsoft’s total no. of program bugs are more than the bugs in the two small programs I just wrote , I can teach Bill Gates a thing or two !!!
