In order to help people out I am starting this thread for members to post links to companies in the NA region that are hiring in this economy so people have some starting point as they look for jobs.
Please also post any information you can or are willing to share about the hiring process. And if you would only prefer to share that information personally (say through pms) state that as well so people can get in tocuh with you directly.
Capital One (the credit card people) are hiring in their richmond and San deigo (Peoplefirst) offices in a wide range of positions. Most are business oriented (business/operations/financial analysts) but they are also hiring IT people for their systems. General preferance is for people with some experience or a strong background. Company web site would be the first step to recruiting but internal referals work way better (find an alumni from your school who is working there so they they can refer your resume). Also they hire and sponser H1Bs.
I would be more then happy to share the actual interviewing process information with anyone who gets to that stage.
Booz Allem Hamilton is hiring. The positions will be based in McLean Virginia. This would be in the govt-civil side so classified status is not needed.
Areas of interest are financial apps, content mgmt, portals and work flow solutions.
For people interested in state jobs, I can tell you that California Community College system is hiring for many positions, all majors, all over the state of California. The only tricky part is the long application (about 4 pages) that you have to fill out, but surprisingly they move reasonably quick once applications are recieved, and ofcourse the salaries are awesome. Please check out www.cccregistry.org for all their listings. Other than that, City of San Antonio (Texas) also has dozens of openings, and the salaries are decent too. Check it out at www.sanantonio.gov/hr
The State (gov't) is always hiring. It's a good "first" job. People should check their state websites and apply from there. It takes time, but if you start looking early, you may find something.
If there are people interested in working with healthcare systems, with a small (800 people) but very fast growing firm (hiring about 25 people every month for the last year), let me know. There is a firm I have researched in the mid west thats growing rapidly.
They are looking for a mix of techincal and business/techi positions.
If any of you know of anyone with accounting background and some public accounting experience, who wants to join a large international public accountancy company, let me know. Multiple positions are available in Northern California.

Is he interested in part time/contract jobs. I have seen places in the Boston area that have a need for people on a short term basis for a few weeks. Is he applying passively or actively? Especially for the networking people he may get some good use out of working for one of those outsourcing companies like Manpower or Kforce (i think thats the name). Also he may need to do some brushing up on how he is presenting his skills. Between NYC and Boston I have seen a fair number of positions though they are generally looking for some experience.
