community

I’m working on this english assignment and there are certain situations i have to compare so i need a quick opinions and seeing how people are so every ready to give their opinions, i thought this forum is the best place to ask such questions. so the question is:
DO communitities have to be defined against something? Or can they be defined in and of themselves?? like what really makes a community:- its shared values, beliefs, background, goals?

If a community is defined or held together by difference defined against something else, then how does that get expressed? Are all communities based to some degree on people’s sense of being insiders or outsiders?

i need some thoughtful responses people. Thanks

Re: community

it was a double click!

Re: community

The essence of being a community is that it is a group of people with common interests and that there is something "shared." Basically, we can't say a community exists until a group with shared identity exists.

Just fyi the word community derives from the Latin, communitas, meaning "common or shared" and the -ty suffix meaning, "to have the quality of."

eeek I am community health major but I suck at defining such a simple term! :-(

Re: community

communities are entities based on sharing common values, interests or goals.
hence they can be defined by their intrinsect binding factor, ie. the values, interests, or goals which tie together all the community members.
if a community is defined against something rather than for itself then it creates a permanent tension climate that could result in the dissolution of the comunity when peace is back with the "enemies"
one example could be pakistan vs india...if you define pakistanese identity solely as oposed to the indian identity, then anyone trying to make peace with indians would be seen as willing to destroy the bound btw the members of that community "pakistan"....that's why finding much more to make to national pakistanese identity by itself rather than as opposed to india is necessary to build peace with india afterwards.

as inside a community you share something with others, yes you are closer to them than to outsiders.
for example i am a member oof gupshup community and can share a lot with fellow (senior) members, others feel left out in our discussions and it is the feeling of any "outsider" when insiders are with each others.

sorry but you posted in the middle of the night:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Re: community

Gemini the Great and parissenoor explained it well. You can also look into 'social capital' because it is also about communities, a sense of wellbeing from having shared interests and goals. Good luck.
