Communists mark 30 years of power in Indian state

KOLKATA: Thousands of Indians took to the streets waving red flags and singing revolutionary songs on Thursday to mark the 30th anniversary of the world’s longest-serving democratically elected communist government.
Hundreds of supporters of the leftist government in the eastern state of West Bengal marched to a rally at an indoor stadium in the state capital Kolkata, shouting “long live revolution” and “ready for another world record”. “We are skipping office today and will all flock to hear our leaders announce future plans,” said Anilabho Chatterjee, a 40-year-old supporter, his face smeared with red vermilion.
The communists returned to power for a seventh term last year, pushing a reformist programme of industrial expansion that has sparked violent protests, as authorities try to acquire farm land for factories despite fierce opposition. Opposition parties prepared to observe “Black Thursday”, blaming the left for scores of deaths earlier this year after farmers protesting government land seizures clashed with police. That’s one proud achievement Hindustan has under it’s belt of ‘democracy’. I didn’t realise love for North Korea was so strong in Hindustan.
