Communication skills

Are communication skills overrated? Like do I need to consider people emotions when I talk to them? I'm a really direct person and I usually don't show my emotions myself. How would I increase my communication skills cause its not like there is a textbook out there that teaches you this stuff. I figure you are either born with a great personality and can make a lot of friends and connections or you have shi**y personality and are a loner

Communication is a part of your personality but your personality is not all about communication. Some loners have great personalities, and some sh*t personalities have a lot of friends.

However, communication is definitely the key higher levels of satisfaction and better relationships. Spend time with and observe people who have great communication skills and it will eventually rub off on you. Let go of robots for some time - they clearly aren't helping.

Agreed with Cashmere, communication skills and personality don't always have a causation.

Lol I am a loner naturally but can make friends very easily whenever I go and want to! being naturally aloof does not equate to having a crap personality or poor communication skills.

BP,

No, silly (and I say this kindly)…communication skills are not overrated, lol. We are so dependent upon them in every sphere of life (personal, professional, etc). I don’t have any references, but you can definitely find books and online resources on how to improve your communication skills. And Cashmere made a good suggestion about learning through observation.

Yes, we do have to consider people’s emotions when we talk to them. A more diplomatic tone goes a longer way in making people more receptive to you. We don’t always know what a person is going through and we all vary in terms of sensitivity, so speaking with some empathy provides our words with a cushion that (sometimes) we need from others as well. The bulk of communication is nonverbal (body language, gestures, etc) so keeping an open body language can help with people perceiving you more positively …even if you’re not much of a talker.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Personalities match communication styles, socialisers love to show off and talk a lot about themselves, dress well drive nice cars etc, directors focus more on task and small, irrelevant talk annoys them and relators need to make sure everyone is happy and it is important to understand how to communicate with different personality types.
