Comics

Anybody read Marvel comics? Specifically the X-men books? I stopped reading after the Onslaught saga due to the comics being pretty damn pathetic. None to interesting really.

Has that changed with the new story arcs like Messiah Complex and House of M?

Re: Comics

used to religiously as a kid and even as a teem but then kinda drifted away, been ages since I read any. marvel although kicks dc arse all over the place in every dimension and alternate universe, even in the what if story lines dc comics get their butt whooped

Re: Comics

Same here. I haven't read one since what...2001 or so. But so bloody bored here that I need something to do. Plus they have always been fun escapism for short periods.

Never liked DC comics. The Avengers were always so much better than the Justice League.

Re: Comics

I mostly read spiderman, avengers, xmen, ironman, some daredevil, x factor.
interestingly enough I liked the more complex characters more, the 'evil' in marvel universe was fairly subjective..their motivations, whether it was galactus, dr doom, mr sinister, magneto.

love what they have done with the marvel movies, even though they water down stories a bit or cheese it up to appeal to the masses at times.

Re: Comics

Reading comics was my favorite hobby growing up. :naak:

Re: Comics

what about your fav characters?

Re: Comics

I only read x-men. even then that was like 7 to 8 comics. X-men, Uncanny X-men, Excalibur, New Mutants, X-factor, X-force and god knows how many other one shot series.

Always been a big fan of Cyclops. Never did get the whole Wolverine deal. Other than that Colossus esp. when he gave his life to cure the legacy virus.

As for the movies. All of them have been great save for the X-men movies. They were too Wolverine centric for my tastes. That is why I liked the X-men comics. It was a team based comic with no single one hero.

Re: Comics

I used to practically live in Gosh comic store London…those were the days…:naak:

I kinda grew out of them…or rather, i think i was forced to grow out of them; i came home one day… to find that all my comics had been disposed of… apparently the cleaning lady thought the comics were left out to be recycled - yeah right mum. :vivo:

Re: Comics

maroush, i have a tale even sadder than yours.
when I left home for uni and came to US, my bros assumed I had died and they could do as they please with my stuff, so my comic collection was 'loaned' to people, never to get back or getting back in tatters, much of it missing, ripped..my action figure collection destroyed. I had some real collectible comics in there as well.

My geekdom was forcefully taken away from me :( and they now say that I should be thankful for that..gadhay

I liked the x men origins movie with wolverine.
and you are right in the movies they focused on wolverine too much, and cyclops and colossus got shortchanged, even magneto was done in a very one dimensional manner, while is is a much more complex character.

I am looking forward to the avengers movie. I thought Ironman was done well, and hoping ironman2 will be good.

of all marvel movies though, I thought the first hulk and fantastic four were bad, daredevil was nasty, did not bother to see electra..and if you want something really lame, watch the fantastic 4 movie they never released back in early 90s :)

They did a tv version of SHIELD/nic fury with that knightrider chap as nick, sigh it was not too bad since it was a TV movie, but come on, Nick Fury is a badass..

spiderman was a bit too teeny bopper lovey dovey too, i wish they held back on that a bit..

but all in all, I would rather see these stories as movies than not

next origins series would be magneto from what I read, and that would be fantastic. I am a huge fan..my bros even bought me a magnet helmet as a gag, it just sits on its display thingie in my closet :D

Re: Comics

Agree with you on most point save for the Hulk movies. Never did like them. I love Iron Man for all the songs. They take theme from Iron Maiden and a lot of AC/DC songs. Tugs at my metal loving heart. Plus the actor whatever his name is does a good job as Tony Stark.

But yeah Daredevil was pretty bad but its always been a pretty bad comic. Electra was a botched job. She is an interesting character but they really botched the movie.

I have seen the trailer for Iron Man 2 and it looks pretty good.

And the best part? Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury. Now that is badass.

Re: Comics

i dunno about samuel jackson as nik fury..he was never a black dude u know
I mean it was enough that king pin was black in daredevil, although he did a great job as kingpin.

as good as ian mckellen is i think they should have picked someone younger for that role, although the guy I am thinking off is old too now, I think rutger hauer would have been good. but then maybe its just the way I imagined magnetto to be..is a little too frail in ian mckellan. patrick stewart was made for prof x though.

robert downey jr is a fantastic actor, sadly his drug problems had him out of action for ages, but check chaplin out, he was in it and fantastic.

Re: Comics

Oh i know Nick was white. But you will notice 90% of the original characters are actually white men. These comics were after all created in the 1960s and 1970s. Its fun to see names like Scott Summers, Warren Worlington, and others. \

Agreed on Professor X as well. As for Magneto I didn't mind Sir Ian that much. But I know very little of hollywood so I can't choose anybody else to fit that role.

I found the actors for Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm to be a little off - the case of Cyclops way way way off. He was a damn love sick puppy. While Haley Berry is indeed very beautiful she does not do Storm justice. Storm is an African princess with the control of the elements at her hands. Berry's performance was off, too weak for my tastes.

Re: Comics

The issue with nick fury is that he is special ops, intelligence, a very global very smart polished guy with a real mean streak to him. samuel l jackson in order to do justice to nick fury will have to get out of his element, samuel l jackson does the angry man very well..and thats simple not nick fury.

i love how in marvel movies there are links to others, like captain america shield in iron man or his frozen body in hulk, then the rumoured thor sighting in hulk, etc etc, punisher in spiderman 2..etc

Re: Comics

No one was in Richie Rich or Archie? :bummer:

Re: Comics

Wolverine

archie yes, richie rich, not so much.
you do realize there is an archie movie out there right?
although it may not be what you would expect.

TinTin, Asterix, Archie

Re: Comics

Used to read Marvel Comics while growing up. Was big on Xmen too. However I am very big on Archie comics. Have like more than 500 or something at home. I collect. I love Archie comics.

Re: Comics

Obviously nobody appreciated quality comic books .>DCU the people who invented all the great graphic novels rule..marvel comics spidey, x men were good but never cared much for the broader universe.

Comics are way too expensive nowadays sadly..r there any good sites to download classics from?
