Hello ladies I have a question…I have long, very silky, jet black hair. But my hair is fine. I use hair oil every second day and it appears to look a bit thicker now. Basically I am toying with the idea of colouring it. I would love to go a dark blonde colour but I am terrified that this will fry my hair. Any experiences? Has anyone attempted this and ended up with a head of damaged hair? I really want to go for it but I have worked hard to grow it and get it in good condition and so I don’t want to mess it up. Also, if I do colour it, how often will I have to keep colouring it to maintain the dark golden blonde (keeping in mind that my hair is very dark)? Or should I just leave it as is?
I’ve kept my natural color for several years now. But I went through a phase where I dyed it many, many times…myself and also professionally. And in both cases, I liked my hair in the beginning…but then later on it would look fried and damaged even when I used treatments. And at that point I can’t wait to chop off the colored ends and get back to natural color again, lol. There is a new commercial hair dye that is made mostly from oils…so you could explore that option. I’ve never tried it though. I’m sure many would disagree…but don’t mess with ur hair by applying chemicals…especially if you’ve been blessed (MashaAllah) with nice hair.
OP, have you gone lighter before? Would suggest trying highlights to see if you really like being lighter first (also easier to maintain) and then lightening gradually if you’re not used to it..
If you do decide to go blonde all over be prepared for a lot of maintenance and upkeep.. Roots should be done once every 2 or 4 weeks (depending on how much regrowth you’re ok with).. My hair is platinum so basically as light as is humanly possible lol and I do mine once a month but it’s not black naturally and I don’t mind a bit of my roots showing.. I also have to be super careful with it to avoid breakage and so on.. I take Biotin (with Zinc) regularly and keep heated appliances to a minimum (hairdryer is ok on low heat but I don’t use straighteners.. If I want curls I use rollers rather than tongs as they’re gentler).. You’ll need a really good shampoo and conditioner (TIGI Oatmeal & Honey for ex) plus deep conditioning treatments/hair masks as well if possible..
Needless to say if you want easy and no-hassle hair do not go down this route.. It’s a colour that can look awful + really skanky if not done well but lovely when looked after properly.. Am loving Jennnifer Lopez ‘bronde’ too atm
Thanks girls…still undecided…would LOVE to go platinum lol but let’s see if I get the courage oh and Deeba, no I have never coloured my hair before (not even streaks).
^oh yikes…don’t go platinum blond. Have a relative who did that and it’s still not flattering on her even though she’s really light-skinned and her features can pass for non-Desi. Even her colored contacts don’t help the platinum hair look. It look like trying too hard.
^Coloured contacts with platinum looks tacky and trying too hard.. I think features are more important than skin tone tbh though.. I saw a Pathan girl on Twitter the other day with natural blue or green eyes and dyed very light blonde hair but it looked crazy cause her features were really sharp.. On the other hand there are girls like Beyonce who are darker but can pull it off quite well imo..
Both blonde and jet black can be hard to pull off.. I’ve seen English girls look a bit ‘witchy’ when they’ve dyed their hair very dark so it goes both ways..
OP, best try something subtle first and see how you like it, maybe even something like a mahogany or chestnut brown then go lighter gradually.. Deffo wouldn’t recommend going much lighter quickly..
Thank you ladies! I think you are right…best to gradually go lighter than get a shocker by doing it all at once..
And btw..I agree..Beyoncé does pull of the blonde beautifully although I have to say when Kim K went platinum a month or so back I don’t think it really suited her…totally depends on the person and their features.
I also thought the maintenance would be a pain…is it do-able at home or would it be a must to go to the salon? I would prefer the salon of course but realise it could get quite pricey and time consuming.
Deeba do you have long or short hair? Do you find the platinum breaks your hair alot?
OP i would gradually go lighter as to go from black to blond is a massive change. I had highlights and they were light and i hated it at first but i knew that could easily be sorted!
Yes I think going lighter gradually is the key! What colour were your highlights? Have you ever changed your entire hair colour? If so, did you also find a lot of damage occurring?
If you can resist then don’t change it! I bleached my virgin hair and it did damage. What might be of interest to you:
~highlights/streaking (damaging only stripped hair, easy to maintain, more highlights more damage/less highlights, less damage)
~Dye (semi-permanent or permanent, both will fade eventually, maintain new growth, buy color treated shampoos)
~An ombre effect (most damage at tips, gradually up to mid-shaft)
~ A dye to uplift black and highlights or streaks for a 2 toned dimensional look…very pretty!
With anything you choose, please start gradually. If you eventually want to go platinum blond space out your processes/appointments 3-4 months apart and in a year you’ll get your desired look.
Bleaching strips the hair of its pigment. This process causes damage. One way to “reverse” the damage is to deposit back into the hair, which means to add color to it. A darker color after a strip process seemingly makes it look healthier and shinier. Please note, a strip process is permanent whereas a dye is a deposit and can fade.
That DOES help too- thanks! in terms of covering up a few grey hairs then (on my natural colour)…would just a root touch up solution be best? And at the salon or at home? Will this also damage hair?
You’re welcome, I learned all that when I was going to dye my hair. I hope I saved you a lot of damage!
If you do a root touch up at home, initially you can use that solution on the lengths of the gray hair and thereafter continue as new growth comes. Or if you rather let the salon treat you initially to save you that headache you can use that option too, and touching up at home as needed. I wouldn’t worry about damage to the hair for this option.
Just make sure you don’t have a reaction to the solution. My friend can no longer cover grey due to severe reaction to some ingredients. Initially we thought it was ammonia, but we purchased an ammonia free dye and she fought for her life during that process too. So at the salon or at home, take caution and do a skin test. Don’t hesitate to ask questions at the salon.
Ive never lightened my whole head its not something that appeals to me but highlights r nice when they are done properly and not streaky. My sisters prefer my hair lighter on me it just took me a while to get used to it
I had a ash blond/caramel mix they did add bleach to my hair to lift it and then a toner to allow for the color to settle.
As with any hair color just important to keep it well conditioned regular trims and go easy on the heat! I went on holiday a few weeks after and my hair became even lighter so i just went and had a toner put on to darken it abit.!
But if ur seriously considering going light all over start off with a softer brown and then work your way down
ok. it seems like i’m the only one who uses mehendi on her hair. lol. My hair was beginning to thin out so I started applying mehendi/henna (i have dark brown/muddy hair) and after the application, my hair has taken on a reddish-brown tinge. In the sun it looks like it’s red and ablaze. lol. But yea, mehendi improved the over all quality of hair; it became stronger, sticker and shinier. Plus i got the color which in all honesty, i wasn’t really looking for but when i took off the mehendi, got a pleasant surprise. lol
Bellashabba, I don’t get noticeable breakage but I’m quite obsessive about looking after it.. I do my roots once a month and keep heat to a minimum.. It’s long-ish but I’m growing it down to my elbows.. I take 10mg Biotin (with Zinc) every night, condition after every shampoo and use a mask/deep conditioning treatment once a week or so.. I’ve been meaning to try Mega Tek for a while as well to speed up growth even more (it’s meant to be amazing)..
Mzprincess88, My hairdresser used to do my roots but she charged £60 and that plus £350-odd for extensions as well meant it was getting ridiculously expensive.. I can do my roots at home for like a fiver now lol.. I use Jerome Russell which gets it down to platinum easily in 45 mins.. I’ve used Schwarzkopf XXL in ‘Absolute Platinum’ as well but I much prefer the Jerome Russell (easier to use, less mess to clean up and nicer results imo, usually don’t even bother with a toner with that).. My hair has been dyed on and off since I was 18/19 so I have a good idea of how long to leave bleach on for, what strength to use etc. etc. Would not recommend it for anyone not used to dying their hair though, there’s a lot of potential for damage..
You should be able to do pull a darker blonde tone.
Get it done professionally and inquire about ‘Olaplex’ it’s protects the hair thru the chemical/colour processing phase prior and after
I use mehndi regularly, this time i added lemon and olive oil and they turned brownish and not red ( i don;t like the red tinge either) , although they did turn a bit dry though, i think it was lemon that dried them out ( but other then that, the colour is a beautiful brownish shade - i wanted to go lighter, was planning to get highlights or something but skipped the idea, my hair is already very fine, cant afford more damage , but i did find out that mixing chamomile tea with henna gives that light brown shade ( along with olive oil) so will try that out next time!
