Anyone had a colonoscopy done to detect bowel cancer? Any experiences plz of the whole procedure and any complications you had? A member of my family is having this done today but I’m very anxious, the risks outweigh the benefits I think :-/
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
I got it done about 7 years ago, I have high acidity problem doctor wanted to make sure that I do not have any cancer. It was not painful. I drove to hospital and back on my own. I do not know about any risks if there are any risks my doctor did not tell me.
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
No real risks, feels very weird and also you fart a lot after which is always funny.
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
Without anaesthetic it’s pure hell but with it it’s a breeze.. I had one last year..
Thought I was gonna die before the injection (stupidly went against doctor’s advice to have it as I wanted to see if I could handle the pain
) but once I’d had it I totally relaxed and it was actually quite cool watching what was happening on the monitor in front of me..
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
I have no idea what makes you think that. I had a colonoscopy done a few years ago. I was put to sleep during the procedure and woke up in the recovery room. I was tired the rest of the day but other than that, it was fine. I woke up about an hour after the procedure (it takes me a longer than the average person to come out of anesthesia) so I frankly don’t remember farting lol. But hubby was kind enough to point out I was doing that a lot while asleep in the recovery room.
The bowel prep where I had to drink tons of nasty fluid the night before was the most horrible part of this experience.
Colonoscopy does have risks…the worst one being the chances of intestinal perforation - where they can accidentally poke a hole in the intestine. My husband has dealt with a few cases over the years where this happened. This, however, is rare.
Given that a colonoscopy is the ONLY way to detect/rule out colon cancer, the risks do NOT outweigh the benefits…unless you’d prefer the cancer not be detected and the person die from it untreated instead of dealing with the risks of the procedure.
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
The risk I meant was intestinal perforation :o
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
Although I was very anxious, the doctor +nurses were good, and yes everything went well Alhamdulillah, no problems afterwards. And test showed no signs of cancer, nothing to worry about .

For me, I'd rather deal with this than undiagnosed colon cancer. I would rather my parents, husband, and anyone else I love deal with this than die from undiagnosed colon cancer. Having a diagnosis gives the person power to choose whether to pursue treatment or not. If its too late for treatment, at least everyone knows that and can make the best of whatever time is left over. But that's just me. You may feel different.
Re: Colonoscopy :-/
Yes I agree with you paheli, it's best to find out rather than not knowing. But an aunty in the family also had this procedure done + unfortunately her intestine got perforated so she had to undergo several ops, now she has bag fitted :-/could happen to any unlucky person, although doctors try their best to be careful
