Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

Colombia and Venezuela facing a serious diplomatic rift…I am not very much aware of the whole background but based on these news, i think Venezuela is making too much noise …I mean, Venezuela is creating dispute over the capture of a Colombian citizen in Colombia by Colombian government.Colombia has clearly denied that any of its agents entered Venezuelan territory during the operation.God knows…

Venezuela has recalled its ambassador to Colombia, in an escalating dispute over the capture of a Colombian rebel.

Venezuela said the capture of Rodrigo Granda in Caracas was a violation of sovereignty, and accused Bogota of bribing Venezuelan agents to catch him.

On Wednesday a Colombian minister admitted his government paid bounty hunters to help seize Mr Granda.

Colombia has denied that any of its agents entered Venezuelan territory during the operation.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says his government’s investigations show Mr Granda was illegally kidnapped and then taken across the border.

‘No violation’

Venezuelan Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel said on Thursday that the ambassador to Bogota had been recalled for consultations.

Colombia’s action, he added, constituted “a crime that could have international implications”.

He said five Venezuelan National Guard officers and three police officers had been arrested on suspicion of aiding Mr Granda’s abduction from Caracas in return for a reward from Colombia.

Colombian Defence Minister Jorge Alberto Uribe on Wednesday said his government had paid for information which resulted in the Farc rebel being captured in Colombia.

Unidentified informants told Colombian police in December that Mr Granda was in Venezuela, and offered to hand him over or give information resulting in his capture, he said.

He insisted that the operation had been carried out without violating Venezuela’s sovereignty.

Mr Granda is described as the unofficial foreign minister for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the country’s main leftist rebel group.

Re: Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

Just my two cents. Columbia =Afghanistan.
columbia is riddled with drug lords and internal civil fighting has been going on for atleast 20years now. There is some interesting stuff on a web site that I will PM you shortly.
They also have some issues with territorial boundries with houndras and venezuela. So I am not surprised if Venezuleans ordered their Amb back home.

Re: Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

Verizon is right, Colombia is a south american afghanistan (minus the religious extremists that is). The rift has been there due to territoril issues...zarr,zan, zameen..as always.

The issue ofcourse is with troops or agents of another country entering your country to arrest someone. Even if the countries have cordial relations, that is bound to be an issue.

Re: Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

Venezuela's love for protecting Colombian rebels must be appreciated. Not many countries will go out on a limb to protest arrest of their own citizens (remember Aimal Kaansi, anyone).. and they are crying foul over someone else's citizen. How cute! :)

Re: Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

I think the bigger issue is how it was done and not what was done. If the countries have a treaty in place then that is the channel that should have been used. If there is no treaty then its S.O.L you cant just go and get someone.

Re: Colombia and Venezuela facing a diplomatic rift

There is a mention of "bounty hunters". I heard that term before in the arrest of that millionair heir to a fortune earlier, but can not understand under what laws do these 'bounty hunters' operate. Are they like a "citizen's police" or are they just greedy people who violate all kinds of laws themselves? This is not specifically limited to the already prevalent lawless states of South America.
