College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

No, I am not going to any of those places. I came across this on Gupshup on another thread, so I was just curious. The person said

College education is FREE for foreign students also? I know it’s free for residents.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

I had a friend who studied for free in Sweden as a foriegn student. I am not sure of the details.

My fiance studies in germany (post graduate) but he is on a full scholarship. If you need more info on it I could ask him for it.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

Education is free for anyone in Germany (at least for the time being), but they are planning to implement fee for non-EU students. But u must be fluent in German language to study free. All English based courses are charged.

Same rule is applied for Sweden.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

I am doing my phD here in Germany. If u enrole in a university u have to pay an amount to study. The amount is like 150€ per semester. Since I get a full stipendium, i pay only 90€ per semester. Fee varies with diferent universities. The cost of living is much cheaper in Germany. Ok I should add that it also depends on where u sudy. The cost higher in universities in big cities like munchen, stuttgart, Berlin, Frankfurt and so on.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

Too late now, things are changing from 2007. On top of it, is it easy to be fluent in German or French? Please dont compare it with English, pakistanis study English from the age of 5 or 6 (in most of city schools). Morrocons in France & Turkish in Germany/NL are taking full advantage of free Education system, as they do learn respective language from early age.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

well you have to pay tution for the english medium ones and that is one of the reasons your fiance’ was on scholarship.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

Education is also free here in Austria. Only on university level you pay a registration fee every semester (like in Germany). That is around 370 Euro per semester for EU-nationals and around 740 Euro per semester for non EU-nationals. However you have the same problem as in Germany: There are only very, very few English based courses and for the German based ones you have to be fluent.

Re: College Education in Germany and Sweden is even free for foreign students?

Lusi, thanks for explaining it.

I asked him in detail and was told that not all the programs offered in his university are in english. Only a select few are. Sorry for the mis-information.
