cold weather n laptops

Very basic question here

is it a smart thing to bring ur laptop to uni when its -35 outside!

Re: cold weather n laptops

if you want to go tobbogging on it :p
its okay for minute or so but it wouldn't be a wise choice for longer intervals.

Re: cold weather n laptops

Every manufacturer has operating temperatures in their specifications… Check the specs.

Re: cold weather n laptops

There’s nothing wrong with it. I once left my laptop in my car over night at -30C. I brought it inside, althrough the lid was kind of frozen, it opened up and worked like a charm. Walking outside for a bit until you get into University is not going to be a problem.

Re: cold weather n laptops

Electronics work much better in cold temperature than in warm one.. Just take care of the screen...!

Re: cold weather n laptops

You can transport your laptop but don't turn it on right away. Give it couple of minutes (10-15 ideally) to come to room temprature (and let any frost on it fade away).

In terms of using it outside in sub-zero tempratures? Same idea - generally not advisable because condensation / frost is basically water and it can cause damage to electronics - hence, don't do it unless you really have too.

Re: cold weather n laptops

things in a PC / laptop are mostly made keeping these enviornemts in mind too and I dont think so they get rusted or get watry so fast...

Re: cold weather n laptops

I take my laptop everywhere, subzero to boiling hot, never had a problem.

Re: cold weather n laptops

laptops and electronics in general like cold temperatures. The only problemsusually are mechanics e.g. hard drive.

Once it gets gooing it will heat up anyway, most likely beyond O celcius

Re: cold weather n laptops

yup, no problem

Re: cold weather n laptops

thanxs, yeah i basically just have to walk around campus, mind u its kinda big, and go from the metro/subway to campus/home. thanx!

Re: cold weather n laptops

As you see metal contracts when its cold. When your hard drive's metal disks contract, the data will also contract and all of your filesizes will show as half their size. This is a good methord to fit a 8 gig DVD onto a 4.7 gig disk. But if you take that disk to a warm place then the data will expand and you will have a very heavy disk.
