coil? or something else....

Re: coil? or something else....

Nadz the mirena coil has very good research suggesting that it actually lightens periods. Patients with menorrhagia are often given the mirena (hormonal) coil to control heavy bleeding. The alternative is the copper coil which Inspiron has mentioned. That does not contain any hormones so will have no effect on your periods.

Both coils work for 5 years. As far as I have studied, you should not feel anything, except the threads of the coil if you go looking for them, so don't worry about that. There is a small chance of infection. If you have a few weeks before going to Pak, you could have it inserted and then make sure all is well before going.

The other alternatives are the implant in the arm, that one is the most variable in terms of whether you will bleed more or less or the same. The advantage of it is that as soon as it is taken out you will return to fertility.

Other options are the pill as has been suggested, just need to remember to take it.You can also get contraceptive patches that you change every week, but don't know if they will be available in Pak. There is also a depo injection in the arm but that has to be repeated every 12weeks.

Then you are left with condoms, or natural family planning, track when you are fertile and when are your safe times but it is obviously not a great method.

All in all, the mirena coil could solve a lot of your problems in one go or the copper coil could just provide you with contraception. Also, they like to put them in during certain times in your cycle ( first few days normally, so bear that in mind when planning how long you have to get it sorted).

There should be a family planning nurse t your practice that can go through everything with you.

I hope that helps,

Good luck :)

Re: coil? or something else....

thing is i would try the coil, BUT, because im going pakistan permaently, im worried incase theres anything wrong, or goes wrong, i cant just come back to sort it out. and i know it sounds silly but i dont want to go to a doc over there whom im not comfy with plus where i went to for a few visits i felt they lacked certain amount of tact and knowledge when explaining or telling m,e something. now obv this isnt everyone in pak but the 2 docs i experienced, i personally felt only my own doc here who knows me and understand all side effects. i just wouldnt feel comftble over there so i thought pills are easier option for me in my situation as im going pak now.

plusssssssssssss, i heard having the coil fitted hurts....well hurts a little, and then having it removed hurts more. i donooo.....my main issue really is hat im going there now, if i wasnt going, i woudlve had the coil.

Re: coil? or something else…

so if you dont want the IUD, why open a thread about it? :cb:

anything hormonal will have side effects like mood swings, weight gain etc etc… there is a non hormonal IUD that is paragard (mirena has hormones) and since it doesnt have any hormones, no side effects but people either love it or hate it.

nadz… if you are not comfortable with anything in Pakistan… why go back? stay here and wait until your husband makes the move.. he may, someday! you can choose be miserable without your husband in UK or in Pakistan with him.. choice is yours?

Re: coil? or something else....

nahi man, i just wanted to know wether ppl agreed or disagreed with me. maybe i was making a silly deicsion. the pills dont cause weight gain. thats what they say. and its not proven.

Re: coil? or something else....

If you have those concerns then they are valid, but complications would be the worst case scenario, many women have the coil for upto 5 years with no complications at all. As GTG has said Paragard (the copper coil) has no hormones if that is what you are worried about, but doesn't help with heavy periods.

I have watched both mirena & copper coils being inserted and to be honest it does look painful (I am not going to lie) but most women handle it, and they don't have any anaesthetic. Taking it out is not painful at all, they literally just pull on the threads and it is out.

You need to just decide whichever method you are most comfortable with. Above are all the methods I know to be available in the UK. It is your body at the end of the day, so just make sure you are happy with which method you would like to use.

Re: coil? or something else....

thanks.

can you have an anaesthetic....i hate pain. i had a skin tag removed few days ago from my neck and even with an anaesthetic, i still flinched, and squirmed and literally had palpitations even though no pain was being felt. even at smear tests i nearly end up crying. so hence why im worried about the coil.

as far as i know pill dont cause wight gain,........am i right.

Re: coil? or something else....

ewww...why would you want a piece of metal or plastic inside you? Condoms is the safest option (the good quality ones).

Re: coil? or something else....

No.Although different people respond differently but they can cause weight gain.

Re: coil? or something else....

Nadz I am not entirely sure. I think I read that it is not really a direct relationship between hormonal contraception and weight gain, but depending on which pill you are prescribed, there may be weight gain depending on each individual. I will check the BNF and let you know.

He he, Catskin I can't get that thought out of my mind whenever counceling a patient! but the medical staff seriously think that the coil is the most amazing think ever.

Re: coil? or something else....

if the pill works for you then great (and it does for many people without issues). i'm on the third kind now, they are a pain in the butt. every one has had very real problems for me. the current one has the least but still, i feel so much better when i'm not taking it.

if you can go with something non-hormonal, that would be a good option, just be aware of the complications.

stuff like the injection, implant are all hormone based and then it's not just like the pill where you can stop taking it if you don't like it.

Re: coil? or something else....

hmmm, ok so anyone using the coil? and it doesnt make periods longer/heavier does it.....i did read it does, but people saying its not. so totoally confusing. but at the moment i have theprescription for the coil in my bag, was about to get it, then diodnt. came home, thought about the pills. so tomrmw is my appointment. coil or pills...aghhhhhh.

for those who use the coil-the copper one, theres NO side effects ????

Re: coil? or something else....

and the copper coil-or any coil-are you protected straight away, or in time?

Re: coil? or something else....

it CAN make period heavier and even more painful especially for first couple of months... and like I said before either people love it or hate it.. it maywork for you, it may not so remember that in your mind.

and yes you are protected right away but then usually insert it during your period to make sure you are not pregnant (along with the negative pregnancy test) so I guess after taht you are good to go.

Re: coil? or something else....

god woman make the man work for his fun and tell him to be on top of protection..buy condoms!

shudder.. coil... shudder.

Re: coil? or something else....

Some men just don't care about contraception for whatever reason so in a way coil is a good solution for lazy and careless husbands.

Re: coil? or something else....

^what a generalization!!!

Re: coil? or something else....

I said some. And especially in case of nadz where she herself stated that they had 2 kids in 2 years.

Re: coil? or something else....

well if she was really bothered, she would have taken care of it. obviously her husband is not going to be that bothered, he's not the one it's going to effect. so no surprise she wants to take control of it now.

lots of people don't like condoms.

Re: coil? or something else....

i dont understand how a husband and wife can go each their way in regards to contraception... i mean.. u get pregnant together.. its not like oh khud hi bhug thay gi.. i got my 5 mins of fun. hello?! the baby is gonna affect both the husband and wife...

but in this case.. we cant blame nadzzz husband ... who knows.. maybe she doesnt like condoms? it isnt always the man.
