ISLAMABAD - Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has directed all the Army officers to stay away from politics in line with the established rules.
According to defence sources, the COAS, in a letter written to the officers, said that the role of the Armed Forces has already been defined in country’s laws and Constitution.
The COAS also said that there was no role of the Army in the country’s politics. He further advised the officers that they should not indulge in any profit-making venture other than their salary and perks as per their ranks.
The informed sources said that no Army officer has so far been penalized on allegations of political affiliation. They added that all of them knew that there was no room for politics in view of their professional duty and obligations.
The sources further said that COAS has also directed that Pakistan Army would itself look after its security and there was no need of police posts to provide security to defence installations and Army units.

The army was getting the police departments to provide security to its defense installations and unis???
To have less of a visible military footprint in civil society on a day to day basis. Pakistan’s armed forces have several many of their bases in civilian urban areas and for day to day security, police are on the streets outside alongside soldiers.
General Kiyani’s new policy will be to put more soldiers on Pakistan’s streets; something Musharraf avoided because he didn’t want to appear to be running martial law.

I can sorta see what you're saying, but this statement I'm laughing at says that they had police hired to guard units. Doesn't talk about patrolling security on the streets of Pakistan alongside or in substitute of Pakistani foot soldiers. I'm taking it to read quite differently.
^ In the wake of multiple suicide attacks against military personnel & installations, poor police walays are being used to act as guards for our faujis imagine that !!! when the so called defenders of the nation need defenders for themselves. This is the epitome of professionalism that army has achieved during 8 yrs of Mush's acting as COAS, President and God.
Generals can’t meet president without COAS’ approval: Beg
By Sajjad Malik
ISLAMABAD: Military officers, including corps commanders and senior generals, cannot meet President Pervez Musharraf without the army chief’s consent, former army chief Gen ® Mirza Aslam Beg told Daily Times on Monday.
Commenting on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Ashfaq Kayani’s directives to ban army officers from meeting and receiving politicians, General Beg said it was a standard procedure and part of army discipline “to keep an eye on the ambitious officers who try to build contacts and exploit them”. “Musharraf had removed Lt-Gen ® Tariq Pervez when he met the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif without his approval,” he added.
He said Gen Kayani’s letter was meant to tell people that the army would stay away from public affairs, but it would have been a better option to directly tell the corps commanders to stay away from politics. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) DG Maj Gen Waheed Arshad said meetings with the president and the prime minister were different from meetings with other politicians, but did not respond directly to whether they would require the COAS’ approval.
