Are your in-laws Punjabi Indians, Scared? These are mostly Punjabi wedding traditions.
Vatna: is basically another name for Mayoun where four lamps or diyas are lit and the bride is made to sit facing them. Oil is constantly poured into the lamps, so that the glow from diyas is reflected on her face. Vatna involves applying the paste made from turmeric powder and mustard oil all over the girl’s body by her female friends and relatives while she is sitting on a patri (a special red board with embroidery). This takes place under a special red cloth held by four women.
The ceremony is done to cleanse and balance the body and to make the girl look more beautiful on the special day of her life. There is always rangoli in front of where the groom or bride is seated. The mother will clean the rangoli, mix it up with water, and put it on the front walls of the house with her hand. It is said that the longer this lasts, the more love the mother has for her son or daughter.
The above is usually done by Hindus and the rasam has been adapted with a few alterations for the Pakistani crowd and we call it ‘Mayoun.’ We have loads of threads on the Ubtan/ Mayoun event. Please browse this:
And, I have no idea what bhari is. We have ‘bari’ here where the In-laws are supposed to bring clothes, cosmetics, shoes, jewelry for the bride and the bride’s side has to send the groom’s clothes, shaving kits, shoes, watch.
