Cloud Storage and security

We had this discussion a few years ago when the term “cloud” wasn’t as popular. Now there are a lot more services available out there. Everyone seems to be coming out with their own brand. I have space on Dropbox and Box.net and Microsoft has also streamlined their Skydrive (down from 25 gb to 7gb) and they have a client to sync your files. Google just started their drive.

What service do you guys use?

Next question, are you concerned about security on those files that are uploaded/sync’d to these services? If yes, then what do you use?
There are a few option available for these out there. TrueCrypt and SecretSync being 2. Or there is Jungle Disk which has pre-internet encryption (PIE) built in. Any preferences?

Re: Cloud Storage and security

Popularizing the "cloud" space is another new world order technique. Privacy will cease to exist in the IT world. As with the Google Chrome book in which users save their data on the "cloud" i suspect this would be to erase personal data. Now user data is stored in some secure server and is owned by multinational companies which are in turn owned by Globalists. I say nay to the cloud. Long live SATA!

Re: Cloud Storage and security

I was using DropBox, as a google person myself, now moved everything to Google Drive. Privacy? i dont keep anything important or private on the cloud, its all the documents & tools that i need in all my devices, phone, tablet, and PC. Its really convenient to sync files between multiple devices, that's it.

If i want to keep something private, i use Truecrypt or the good old password protected Rar archives. There is another problem with cloud, what if the Government seize the cloud storage company (say Dropbox) like what they did with Mega Upload?

Re: Cloud Storage and security

been using Dropbox for the past four years... now to the point where I don't even store files locally - everything is in the cloud.
I'm not that bothered with security and privacy issues per say, but have talked to some client organizations such as lawyer firms for whom this is a valid concern.

For me as an end-user, I'm pretty satisfied with the SSL based transfers to Dropbox servers and the AES-256 file encryption on the backend. Also, since Dropbox used Amazon S3 infrastructure, the physical security aspect is also taken care of.

For anyone who's still concerned, I'd advise for pre-transfer per-file encyption rather than container based encryption like Truecrypt since the latter defies the purpose of instant synchronization with cloud storage.

Re: Cloud Storage and security

The term "encryption" is very cryptic.

I don't think I'm putting private stuff on any cloud shloud.

Re: Cloud Storage and security

cloud concept is the next generation infrastructure. (cheaper the cost of h/w if organization uses cloud environment.)

Re: Cloud Storage and security

^^ I think it is good to organize your documents/material...you have one place to store everything now that we are heading away from physical storage devices. It is convenient as well as easy to access. But I'd be a little concerned about privacy yes.

Re: Cloud Storage and security

Jungle Disk, that I mentioned previously, does per-file encryption. There are other services (e.g. Secret Sync) that create a separate folder which is sync’d using DropBox. But with that said I have taken on TruCrypt. I try to not make volumes too big that they’re difficult to move. I have also read that when a file inside a TruCrypt volume changes its not the whole volume that gets synchronized but just the few blocks. I know that sounds a bit cooky but somebody from DropBox was in that debate.

Jungle Disk, using RackSpace servers only charge 15 cents per gig, if you are paying for it this would be the cheapest route, unless you use over 66 gb of space on services like paid Dropbox.

Click for Jungle Disk features

Other services like Mozy and Carbonite are just backup services, so don’t really get into this discussion.

Re: Cloud Storage and security

Aren't you following the latest tech news? They can't make you give them a password to your Trucrypt encryption unless they already have evidence that you have some incriminating evidence (applies to US laws). They can't go fishing thru your volume for stuff :D

Re: Cloud Storage and security

And do you think it will be hard for them to fabricate some evidence? Anyways, i dont have anything to hide, and i dont keep my personal files there either, actually i dont have any personal files :(

Re: Cloud Storage and security

Its about due processing. Fabricating is on the other side of the coin. Atleast on paper we have to have some law behind our privacy. Hence all the controversy about CISPA and previously SOPA and PIPA.

Re: Cloud Storage and security

1984 much?

Re: Cloud Storage and security

More space the merrier . . . but yes if I'll be uploading anything 'sensitive' then at least I'll zip it and put a password on it . Well we all know big brother sniff through everything we do online .
