^ that quote is somewhat misleading... the rest of the article says that the claim you've quoted above is unsubstantiated and no proof exists yet of whether one is more environmentally friendly/better for baby than the other because no one has actually done any comparative studies.
From the same article:
"There are downsides to both," Berkeley's Hayes said. "It's a tossup of which is worst: wasting our water supply (washing cloth diapers after every use) or filling up our landfills (using disposables)."
i guess it comes down to your budget and your personal preferences.
