Clinton CIA Director Urges Iraq Pullout

Ex-president Bill Clinton’s CIA director, John Deutch, is recommending that the U.S. pull out of Iraq, saying the occupation is likely to be a failure no matter what America does.

“I believe that we are not making progress on our key objectives in Iraq,” Deutch told an audience at Harvard University on Tuesday.

The one-time top Clinton intelligence officer called for American troops to withdraw “as soon as possible.”

“There may be days when security seems somewhat improved and when the Iraqi government appears to be functioning better,” he explained during an address to Harvard’s Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

“But the underlying destabilizing forces of a robust insurgency and warring factions supported by outside governments is undiminished,” he warned.
**
Deutch said the U.S. was wrong to try to impose American values on a foreign country.**

“Our nation embarks on an especially perilous course when it proactively engages in some regions of the world with the intention of achieving a government based on our values,” Deutch said.
**
“It is one matter to adopt a foreign policy that encourages democratic values and institutions in other parts of the world. It is quite another matter to believe it just or practical to achieve such results on the ground with U.S. military forces.” **

Re: Clinton CIA Director Urges Iraq Pullout

Wouldn't a fast U.S. pullout piss off the Iraqi people?

What I mean is...

After the first Gulf War didn't we encourage the Shia's to revolt against Saddam? I think we were supposed to stay and help but we left and a bunch of people got slaughtered?

If we tiptoe out of Iraq now...wouldn't it seem as though we are abandoning the Iraqi people sinse now the War is all about "Liberating the Iraqi's"?

I mean we can't just leave the country in a big mess can we? The Iraqi people could invite us to leave though...maybe a vote or something by them?

Re: Clinton CIA Director Urges Iraq Pullout

It is a bogus excuse of the mightier. First of all a pullout will be beneficial for Americans, (not for American capital, may be.)
Second…who you Americans are to judge for Iraqis? It is up to them if they continue with a mess or come out with a sound system….but your presence will create only mess for all, including for yourselves.

Re: Clinton CIA Director Urges Iraq Pullout

Dear anjjan,

In my book all ready a mess but abandoning the Iraqi civilians to insurgent* factions (I think) likens to a sacrafice.

What of the brave Iraqi men who as policemen risk their life everyday? And are targeted with “stink” bombs?

What about their families?

What about the Iraqi’s who are pleased that Saddam is jailed?

What about those Iraqi’s who step out to vote?

Do you think the so called “insurgents*” might target them for revenge if U.S. troops left tomorrow?

I don’t like the term insurgent because maybe…“All is Fair in Love and War.”

What I mean is…I think it’s fairplay to defend ones land.

But…the “insurgents” are said to target fellow Iraqi’s. They are killing own countrymen.

Supposedly there are warriors from other lands crossing the border to do battle as well. And they also target Iraqi police. Do you think majority of average iraqi’s would like to see those that have made a purpose to slaughter other Iraqi’s taking control of the country? What do you think would happen to Iraqi’s who support Saddam’s removal?

I’m not saying u.s. is in the right. I don’t think waging war on Iraq was the right thing to do. What I am saying is that u.s. waging the war is now moot point. It has all ready happend and there is no way to change that fact.

I do think U.S. owes average Iraqi people some kind of stability before exit it taken.

I don’t understand your comment “judging Iraqi’s.” Who do you feel is juding Iraqi’s? I tell you I do not. Thought never crossed my mind. My thoughts are of safety of the average Iraqi’s.

Agree absolutely huge mistake to encourage American values by force.

<~~ Not a right-winger.

Heart is moderately to lthe eft.

Cannot change past.

Iraqi interim government needs to create own constitution.

Secular or Islamic is decision for average Iraqi’s and nobody else.
