what works for me is taking a bowl of water and putting slices of lemon in it. and turning the microwave on for 2-3 minutes, all the residue is easily removable and no harsh chemicals used. If something is left behind I just repeat it.

actually I do that if there is a strong odour of food inside the microwave and it does work a treat. Smells all lemony…but it doesnt really clean the microwave, does it?
