Classical music in pakistan

Classical music is alive in pakistan or its dead, why most of the pakistanis are ignorant about great singers like ghulam ali (great gazhal singer).

Pakistani bands produce some good music but most of the times vocals are poor. Every one comes with a new thread about some band songs but i never seen any one posting anything about gulam ali.

whether classical music is ignored in pakistani since it is based on raagas and the singers comes from GHARANAs which seems to be very much indian . This is the reason i guess most of the pakstani prefer more western style of music anf ignore classical form of music.

Re: Classical music in pakistan

Are you serious about GHARANS being very much INDIAN???

Re: Classical music in pakistan

no .. but thats what i wanted to know …

Re: Classical music in pakistan

Those who enjoy listening to Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali etc probably keep enjoying great music while others argue about lesser artists:clown:

Seriously, there is a wealth of talent not just in classical music but also in modern music in Pakistan and there are people who enjoy both.

Re: Classical music in pakistan

Classical music in Pakistan is dead. Many reasons for that. Most Pakistanis are totally unaware that Hindustani classical music came to India thru Iran via Amit Khusroo , a muslim. I do believe thought indifference to this great form of music in Pakistan due to its association to India. Many many great Indian classical singers are and were musilms who sang with abandon Hindu bhajans. PIlares of Hindustani classical music were great musicians like Bade Ghulam Ali, Alladiya, All Rakha, Vilayat khan, Bisimillah khan, Ali Akbar khan as well as Pandit Jasraj, Bhimsen Joshi, Rajan & Sajan Mishra, Gundecha bros, Kisori Amonkar, Hirabai Badodekar and many others.

The tolerance to Hindus and their culture that Hindustani classical music demands does not exist in Pakistan. This IMO is a great loss to Pakistan however I realise most Pakistanis in this age and age do no appreciate the music where raaga are called Shivranjani, Bhairavi, Bhairav, Shankara and Hansdhwani. Too bad for them.
Now let me put on a Veena Sahastrabudhdhe CD and enojoy Mian ki todi.

Re: Classical music in pakistan

Great post expat observer - doesnt matter which side of the border you are from to enjoy good music

Re: Classical music in pakistan

I'd rather see European classical music in Pakistan. I find it strange, that almost all countries in the world, regardless of culture or religion, have symphony orchestra's, even India. Why doesn't Pakistan have any?

Re: Classical music in pakistan

Sure. Zubin Mehta conducted Bombay Symphony. BUt westren classical music and hindustani classical music are not mutually exclusive as you imply. If you personally prefer Western classical music that is your choice, but why are you suggesting that it should be in stead of hiindusatni classical? because it comes from India?

Re: Classical music in pakistan

When did I say that? I was just saying that it would be interesting to see the existence of European Classical music in Pakistan. I find it strange that so many other countries (Muslim and Non-Muslim) are aware of and practicing that art, in addition to their own cultural classical music.

Re: Classical music in pakistan

wow, talk about gross generalization. we have no tolerance for hindus huh. Last I checked, we are not the one burning trains and tearing down places of worship. Stop speaking out of you ass. You talk like you’ve lived in pakistan all your life. Piece of advice son, what you hear in vhp meeting about pakistan isn’t always true.

Re: Classical music in pakistan

No you don’t tear down places of worship. because you have already torn down them all. How else do you explain that karachi which in 1947 had a majority population of Hindus has only a handful? Or have you forgotten that Pakistan’s non-muslim population is only 3%? That happened without any coercion from Pakistani muslims? You are a number one bekwasnawaz. Go read The Dawn from time to time if you still read. If you don’t want to get into civil discussions, stop wasting GS bandwidth.
