That was my guess too when I first saw these pics
I think these pics are from D-Day, Beaches of Normandy.

Neither Pakistan nor India existed in World War 2. But as part of the British Empire, the Indian sub-continent contributed tens of thousands of troops to fight against the Axis, in almost every theatre. North Africa, Normandy, Sicily, Italy, Germany, Austria, Burma, the Far East - they were all places where men from the Indian sub-continent fought and died.
My own Grandad spent four years as a Captain in the British Army fighting the Japanese in Burma - close-quarters jungle fighting alternated with close-quarters fighting in cities. His brother-in-law was captured by the Japanese in 1941, tortured and starved for 2 years, and then executed in late 1943 in a POW camp.
However, many men from the sub-continent served the fascist cause as well. Many thousands fought for the Japanese against the Allies, whilst 3,500 Indians served in the Waffen SS, the elite guard of the Nazi Party, under the command of SS-Oberführer Heinz Bertling. This unit, Infanterie-Regiment 950 (otherwise known as the Indische Legion or Legion Azad Hind), saw little combat, being reserved mainly for garrison and anti-partisan roles, as most senior German military leaders scoffed at the idea of the Indian Legion. Hitler's disdain for the unit and his racist views are apparent with his famous quote "If they were given the task of turning prayer wheels then they would be the most tireless soldiers in the world!"
The Indian Legion was eventually forced to retreat to Austria, evetually surrendering to the US Army. They were handed over to the British and taken back to India, where plans to prosecute them for treason were dropped and they were pardoned, as the British feared an uprising due to the Indian troops' general popularity.
