We hear this term these days every once in a while.

Its a theory that states that different civilizations will clash with each other on a global level i.e. differences in religious beliefs, cultures, traditions, races, etc will be the main reason of conflict between people. We will be divided by our cultural/religious identities, resulting in international (mainly political) conflict unless all civilizations learn to tolerate each other.
By the looks of it, we have already entered this era of clash of civilizations.

Well there have been many throughout history... I guess the first is recorded by Herodotus from whom we get "History" in the 6th century BC he wrote about the clash between the ancient Greek and Persain civilisations.
Since that time there have been many clashes and reasons have varied from Trade disputes, Land disputes, Political breakdown, Religous zeal, Imperial desire... and sometimes just pure hellis rage....
But generally it's when two distinctly different parties or "civilisations" for want of a better word clash across a large area. Right now for example we are in a clash of civilisations between the Western materialitic and idealistic world opposing the old school spiritual and freelance world.
It's happened before many times and sadly in History it happens again and again...
Perhaps moderators could move this to Historical threads section so we can discuss the history more deeply, plus it's a rare opputunity to revive a dying forum.

Its not only in the West.
There have been clashes in Nigeria between Muslims and Christians and riots in China in which China killed 3,000 muslims last ramadan, and conflict in Thailand and Philippines
Muslims are in conflict with every major power in this world.
USA - War on Terrorism
Europe - Terrorism, Immigrant Gangs
Russia - Chechenya Wars
China - Uyger Riots
India - Pakistan/Kashmir/Indian Muslims
I think only Brazil is the only major power not in direct conflict with muslims but give it 20 years and high muslim immigration, and conflict will erupt there too.

For your Information the very first historicall clash of Civilisation occured long before the coming of our faith. The Greeks actually instigated the Persian empire by stoking up the Ionian revolt... which is a historic fact, there you have it Western society made a strike at the near east.
The Crusades were instigated by zealot Christians again from the West... America was conquerd by Christian missionaries and Conquistadors again from the West...
That said i do recognise also that Muslim expansion has equally been often just as fervous however very rarely have Muslims launched such big expansion particulalry since the Peak of the Ottoman empire some 5 centuries ago.
Besides modern clashes are primarily over self determination v Imperialism and between trade routes and resources.
To simply say that it's all the fault of Islam is actually very ignorant and totally Islamaphobic... likewise to blame everything on the west is just as ignorant. The reasons why i highlighted the Wests clashes was simply to give you the other side context.
Also many clashes of Civilisation were not in any way related to any culture or religion but to Resources and Trade... would you say the British invasion of Zululand was a punitive action against Muslims?
Like wise Muslims today are in many respects true to blame a lot of thier troubles on the West but at the same time they should not ignore thier own bad apples.
But on Balance it's perfectly fair to say that no Religion be it Islam or Christianity or Bhudism... for that matter whatever, could be blamed as a root cause for such clashes... to simply say that proves your not only ignorant but have a total lack of knowledge on the subject.
The flashpoints you've highlighted are not all caused by faith disputes, economic disputes, disputes over territory and many other things are also causes.
Take the Somali pirates for example i doubt they are clashing with the world becuase of any desire to spread the faith by the sword... more to the point they are simply taking easy pickings from a vital trade route.
Likewise the conflict in China is a territorial one not a religous one, the Uighyurs have been fighting the Han race long before they adopted Islam.
Please bear these thoughts in mind before coming up with baseless hatred.

Seems like someone has lumped these two.
Most of the time a religion is bashed comparing it to a culture rather than religion.
