RAWALPINDI: Former chief of the Steel Mills Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qayyum has advised President General Pervez Musharraf not to exercise his powers under Article 58-2(b) to dissolve parliament or change the Army leadership, adding it would plunge the country into serious crises that too would not augur well for him.

General Qayyum said the best choice for General (retd) Pervez Musharraf is to quit power as, in his view, he (president) did not enjoy the support of any faction of the society.

Qayyum, who served in the Pakistan Army for 40 years with Pervez Musharraf, was responding to questions by Dr Shahid Masood in the popular Geo programme “Meray Mutabiq”.

He disclosed that differences between General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry cropped up over the privatisation of the Steel Mills.

The ex-Steel Mills chief said when the case was being heard by a full court of the Supreme Court, President Musharraf called him (Justice Iftikhar) and asked as to what kind of remarks he (Musharraf) was hearing from him, adding the case should be decided in a manner that it does not cause any loss to the country. To this, Justice Iftikhar said, “You shouldn’t worry. I will decide the case in the best interest of the country.”

The next day when the Supreme Court judgment in the case came, it was totally against the expectations of the president. It was then that a row between the president and the then chief justice ensued.

General (retd) Abdul Qayyum said all the judges on the full court were very honest and competent. They thoroughly did their homework before presiding the court and would make queries to dig into the truth.

To a question, Qayyum said once the then prime minister Shaukat Aziz summoned him and asked him to record a statement in favour of privatisation of the Steel Mills before the Supreme Court. “In response we will accommodate you on a very lucrative post. I told him, Sir, by making me such an offer you have disgraced me,” General Qayyum said.

Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qayyum further disclosed that once Shaukat Aziz called him on phone and asked him to engage Wasim Sajjad, Sharifuddin Pirzada and Abdul Hafiz Pirzada for the case. But I told him that I have engaged Kamal Azfar. They (Aziz) asked about the fee and I told him that he has engaged him for Rs 700,000 to which the then prime minister said that the Mills should pay Rs 6,200,000 to Wasim Sajjad, Rs 3,500,000 to Abdul Hafiz Pirzada and Sharifuddin Pirzada to be paid even above them.

**The former chairman of the Steel Mills said he told Shaukat Aziz that the price of only land of the Steel Mills was Rs 40 billion whereas he was fixing the price of whole the project at Rs 21 billion. This is too low, he further informed the prime minister. He said the prime minister turned a deaf ear to his view and insisted to wrap up the deal before long.
**
Gen Qayyum said, “I then sent my written objections in a letter. He sent me an insulting answer saying that it falls under their purview.”

Gen Qayyum said painfully that he did not know the reserved price. Some people participating in the bidding did know it, he said.

Gen Qayyum expressed the view that Shaukat Aziz’s bad intention was involved in this matter and an FIR should be registered against him.

Replying to a question, Gen Qayyum said he had tried thrice to meet the president to discuss this matter but he was not granted time. “Then one day I received a phone call saying that I should consider myself out of the job.”

The quicker the the Govt. restores the EX CJ the better. When will that happen?

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan’s deposed chief justice said Sunday that officials who bowed to President Pervez Musharraf’s declaration of emergency rule and ouster of judges last year would be “punished.”

Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry made the comments in the city of Faisalabad, where thousands of lawyers and other activists gathered to whip up support for a new round of protests aimed at pressuring the country’s new coalition government to restore the jurists.

Musharraf, a retired army chief who seized power in a 1999 military coup, declared emergency rule in November and ousted several dozen judges to avoid legal challenges to his rule.

Anti-Musharraf parties came to power after winning February elections, forming a coalition that promised to restore the judges. But disputes over exactly how to bring the judges back have pushed the coalition to the verge of collapse.

Chaudhry told the lawyers in Faisalabad that the Supreme Court had passed an order aimed at countering the president’s actions on Nov. 3, the same day the emergency was declared.

In an apparent reference to Musharraf and the judges he installed after the purge, Chaudhry promised that anyone who violated the court’s order “will be punished no matter how big he is and whatever position he is attaining.”

Chaudhry did not specify what he meant by punishment.

The heated rhetoric came hours after the main ruling Pakistan People’s Party offered some details of a plan to reinstate the judges and change the constitution in order to reduce Musharraf’s powers.

Party chief Asif Ali Zardari said he wanted to strip Musharraf of the right to dissolve the country’s parliament and to appoint military chiefs. But he also said Saturday he would “engage the presidency” to smooth the passage of the provisions.

“We have never accepted Musharraf as a constitutional president but always said that we will keep a working relationship,” Zardari said, adding, “We intend to walk him away rather than impeach him away.”

On Sunday, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani — a Zardari party member — said the proposed package was not aimed at setting up a clash with the president.

“Its objective is to balance the discrepancies. … Confrontation with anyone is not our job,” Gilani told journalists in the city of Lahore, noting that previous amendments to the constitution had strengthened the presidency.

Musharraf’s spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday.

Sadiqul Farooq, a spokesman for the second-largest party in the government, that of ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, said it would reserve comment on the package until it sees details.

Associated Press Writers Khalid Tanveer in Faisalabad and Sadaqat Jan in Islamabad contributed to this article.

Shamraz, Hamayun Akhtar is heard nowadays in private gatherings that Zardari/Nawaz were chota chors, I presume he is ghar ka bhedi who was once seriously considered for PM post...stole single digit billions in dollar terms...shortcut and mushy have stolen triple digit billions....wait till other privatisation and equity market scams come to surface step by step....bottom line is inspite of all the fiscal relief the country got after 9/11 the condition of a common Pakistan never detoriated so low....

The people of Pakistan are unable to see any signs of this prosperity in the country...there wasn,t any significant infra structure improvement...no improvement in health and education provided to the people...although we see UBL portfolio which was sold for 14 billion rupees was worth 150 billion in market capitalization almost immediately after privatisation....as the government had already injected 22 billion to clear the NPLs....the bottomline is people of Pakistan will never ever see the billions of dollars Mushy advocates tell us was available in the country....never brought any change in their lives...

Re: CJ stopped Mush & Shaukat from billion $ fraud

Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qayyum was probably himself doing the fraud and is now trying to shift blame on others.

Yea thats what I thought too. Thanks for confirming it. Actually, that conversation led me to research Shaukat Aziz and made me feel proud.

Re: CJ stopped Mush & Shaukat from billion $ fraud

No but Shortcut Parachute Aziz is a farishta who cant even think of fraud.

Re: CJ stopped Mush & Shaukat from billion $ fraud

Thanks for acknowledging. :)

Iam amazed with the skills of MQMers for twisting the facts?

the answer to ur comment is, please have look into the details of the deal, and then talk.

Wait till more fools will showup...

now apart from this General, there is ex.law minister who is saying that he has nothing to do with the CJ case, and it was SHORTCUT and MUSHY...

now pieces of chain is assembling aren't they!

CJ chopped the deal, and MUSHY ( with shortcut) fires him from the post and calls his scum on earth...

having said that, is it good for Mushy to stick to power with all these allegations against him, whereas he fired the CJ on corruption charges ( which was never proved)

I guess nor mushy niether his supporters got any moral values, thats y, either MQM supports him or Ch. of Gujrat or Molana Fazl kind of person are in bed with him.

Can you enlighten the forum readers what made you so proud of this fellow after doing research on him....we may take advantage of your genius research to educate ourselves...

Also enlighten us with the location of infra structure projects, education and health initiatives etc. where these billions of dollars were spent to uplift the lives of Pakistani people....the nation is not able to locate these public welfare projects which were taken up to uplift their living standards...

U ppl will never learn,

Short-cut did made/initiated all those infrastructure, health and education projects, with the aim to promote Azad Jammu Kashmir, and Northern Areas of Pakistan.

Now with that aim in mind, all the projects were constrcuted on the same mountian/cliff which collapsed during the earthquake. Now where is the fault of Short-cut and Mushy here, they did their best...
