Citizenship & confusion!

I have some confusion regarding citizenship rules of different countries. I was pretty clear on it but differing views have caused some confusions.

For countries like US or UK, if the father of a child is a citizen of the place, say British citizen, even if the child is born in a different country he will inherit the status or he will not?

e.g
If a guy is a British Citizen/American citizen and wife is Indian but settled in the UK/US. If their child is born in India, he will be an Indian? How will he get the passport for UK/US later?

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

For a child to acquire US citizenship.

The father must have lived in the US for a period of more than 5 years, 2 years of which must be after the age of 14 and you must have proof for that.

Don’t know much about UK citizenship laws. Found these two websites but don’t feel like reading.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

I don't know much about this, I'd had to read into it.

But I do know that people prefer to have the birth of their children here to get British citizenship, even if they don't intend to be here permanently because I don't think it's otherwise automatic.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

It's safer this way and it means a lot less paperwork. But it might not be possible due her immigration status while she's pregnant.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

It's true for Canada BUT I have heard they might be changing that. There are so many people who have never set foot in Canada but have one parent who is Canadian. Don't know anything about UK.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

If one if the parents is British, their kid would get the British citizenship regardless of his/her birth place.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

There are conditions. There are conditions to prevent a line of citizens who've never actually maintained residence in the country.
Conditions like, how did the parent himself get the citizenship. It can be a trouble if the parent himself got the citizenship through descent. Heck Pakistani citizenship through descent isn't unconditional.

Re: Citizenship & confusion!

Yes, if the parent them self only have citizenship because of descent and never resided in the country then the kid doesn't get citizenship. It's only one a generation thing.
